I am new to this program. Is it safe to use the Advanced feature "Wipe free space"? does it only effect free space and overwrite files that I am deleting or can it effect files I am not deleting?

It will not affect any live files, just free space on your disk. Whether or not you use it is up to you to decide as it takes some time, it isn't a forensic wipe, and it looses its effect as soon as you start using the pc to view or create files again. But you may have a compelling reason.
I thank you for your quick and helpfull reply. With all of the privacy issues out there such a thing can be usefull.
