Software updater tells me there is a new version of Windows Defender. I don’t use Windows Defender, but want to eliminate the “error”. But, if there is an update to Defender, shouldn’t it come through Windows Update? I suspect this is a bug.
v6.30.11385 (64-bit)
It started happening a few months ago when they changed where the Software Updater gets things from.
I haven’t installed v6.30 of CCleaner yet, but I see that they say they have “enhanced Software Updater” to offer even more now.
I agree that it’s unecessary for Software Updater to offer Windows Updates (in most cases) and will cause confusion sometimes.
At least it should only happen if Windows hasn’t done it first.
It might be helpful in the odd cases where someones Windows Update isn’t working properly.
(But if you have deliberately paused Windows Updates then it must be annoying to have CCleaner now pushing them at you).
Mine keeps offering me updates to C++ redistributables.
Those are generally not needed unless/until you install new software, which will include any needed redistributable anyway.
PS. We have asked for some ‘Ignore’ and ‘Skip version’ buttons to be added to Software Updater, similar to the ones already in the Driver Updater.
PPS. Even when you don’t use Windows Defender as your AV/AM it will still occasionally run a scan, so should still be kept updated.
Thank you! I do keep software current even if I never use it, such as Edge.
Started seeing the same things in the Software Updater in recent versions. Never before saw C++ entries , but at least those can be obtained online and installed , even if CCleaner see them several days before they are available. Now , starting with CCleaner 6.30 , it shows that Windows Defender needs an update , even though it is not turned on (I use another program). likely confusing to non-techies.
The next day , the entry for Defender was gone , so it must have updated itself. Even so , it should CCleaner should not be showing a program that the user has no control over.
