Windows 7 updates is broken

Microsoft forgot to change an expiration date, and now all attempts to run Windows Update in Win7 are failing with the bogus message “Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running.”

i m lucky with w8.1 :-)

Thanks Hazelnut for the information. I should have visited here first. Ugh!

When the error occurred and System Restore didn't resolve the issue, I did a search on the Internet regarding the error message and only received "how to fix" search results. I did the first fix listed in the link below to reset Windows Update and it resolved the issue.

You were lucky to get it fixed, many, many Win 7 users have broken updates now.

Several other workarounds listed here but it looks like only Microsoft can fix this mess.

it may have been the main issue that made up my mind to go to Windows 10. (and hell, it was for free)

Update on this situation.

		The problem should now be resolved for anyone who was having issues running Windows update on Windows 7. It appears that the issue was not caused by an expiration of a local file, but actually an expiration of a file located on Microsoft's update servers. Like the local authcab.cab file, this remote file also had an expiration set to the 12/3/17 date and so was causing Windows Update to fail.
	</p>

	<p>
		Over the night, Microsoft updated this file and changed it's expiration to 7/1/25, as seen below, which fixed the Windows Update issue. If anyone is still having problems using Windows Update and receiving the 80248015 error, please let us know and we will see what we can find out.

	<p>
		german
	</p>

	<p>
		rechtsklick auf die Flagge links neben der Windows-Uhr/Datumsanzeige
	</p>

	<p>
		-&gt; wähle "Problem behandeln"
	</p>

	<p>
		-&gt; wähle unter <strong>SYSTEM UND SICHERHEIT -&gt; </strong>"Probleme mit Windows beheben"
	</p>

</div>

i dont know the exactly names at the english windows-version - perhaps similar:

-> rightclick on the flag left from the time/date-thing on the taskbar

-> troubleshoot -> under SYSTEM AND SECURITY -> fix problems with windows update
