When you install Windows 7 on a new system, you traditionally have to go through a long process of downloading years of updates and constantly rebooting. Not anymore: Microsoft now offers a “Windows 7 SP1 Convenience Rollup” that essentially functions as Windows 7 Service Pack 2. With a single download, you can install the hundreds of updates at once. But there’s a catch.
This update package, which combines updates dating all the way back to February 2011, isn’t being made available in Windows Update. If you’re installing a Windows 7 system from scratch, you’ll need to go out of your way to download and install it. If you don’t, Windows Update will download and install the updates one by one–the slower, more tedious way.
- Looks like Microsoft had too many complaints about the VERY large amount of downloads one needs for Win 7 & Win 7 SP 1
- The article also mentions/suggests that MS will provide socalled "Cumulative Updates". But I assume those will also include the Win 10 "nagware". Right ?
- Or MS wants to know how popular this update is.
- One question remains. Is this available for non english versions of Win 7 as well ?
In that tweaking link (post 5 above), it says that the telemetry enablers ARE included.
I'm following this win 10 stuff pretty closely but have not yet started the updating, so don't know for sure.
Would be great to hear from someone who has done it.
Edit: It says over at Ask VG that the telemetry enablers ARE NOT included:
"So this rollup package includes all security and non-security recommended updates but it doesn't contain any Get Windows 10 (GWX) or telemetry related update as far as I know."
- Last april I had to re-install Win 7 SP 1. But I didn't install all the "Optional" Updates. And one of those "Optional" updates was the update that installed the Win 10 nagware. The name of that nagware update was KB 3035583.
- The "Happy Elder Geek" who started the "Roll Up" thread on the "Tweaking.com" website/forum (See weblink above) has updated that thread and now reports that the "Roll Up" didn't work on 3 other Win 7 systems. Perhaps one needs to have a Win 7 system that hasn't been "tampered with" (too much).
- In the name of "Roll Up" there was the addition "v4". In other words it took MS already four attempts to get a stable Update. Perhaps MS will release more (& better) versions of that "Roll Up" update in the future.
- I downloaded the "Roll Up" and that other update but I will NOT install the "Roll Up" any time soon. I will do that only when I decide to re-install Win 7. NOT one second sooner.
