Windows 10 Defender

I know Microsoft’s ruse in antivirus is to flag any programme looking like a pirate as definitely a virus. However I’ve just had Defender report CCleaner as a threat. Has anyone else found this lately?

Hi fastrack1966:

What CCleaner product and version are you currently using (and was it downloaded from an official CCleaner download site like https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds), what specific file is detected as a possible threat by MS Defender, and what is the name of the detection?

I’m currently using CCleaner Free Portable v6.30.11385 on my Win 10 v22H2 laptop. See my 20-Oct-2024 MS Defender Detects Portable ccsetup629.zip as Trojan:Win32/Sonbokli.A!cl about MS Defender detections I’ve been seeing for the past two portable builds, namely ccsetup629.zip (released 16-Oct-2024) and ccsetup630.zip (released 13-Nov-2024). So far I haven’t had any detections for the CCleaner64.exe executables bundled inside those .zip files.

CCLeaner Free v6.05.10110 64-bit
Regret I cannot see a way to insert an image here so here’s the Threat:
PUABundler:Win32/PiriformBundler
Installer was CCSetup564 but I cannot recall where I got it from. Just left Bitdefender to revert to Win Defender but if false positives start arriving to suit the preferences of MS maybe I should rethink my AV

Hi fastrack1966

Sorry, I’m a bit confused. What is your Windows OS, and why are you currently using Cleaner v6.05 (rel. Oct 2022) instead of the latest v6.30 available at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds (rel. Nov 2024, compatible with Win 7 and higher per the system requirements <here>)? Why did you download a v5.64 installer (rel. March 2020)?

Note that the CCleaner Free - Official Sunset Release v5.64 installer (ccsetup564-xp-vista.exe) that is available on the official download page at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds is the legacy version for Win XP and Vista. If one of your machines actually has a Win XP or Vista OS and you want CCleaner Free Portable v5.64 (ccsetup564.zip) to unzip and run off a removable USB stick it’s available at https://download.ccleaner.com/portable/ccsetup564.zip.

If CCleaner v5.64 is required for an older OS and you download ccsetup564-xp-vista.exe and/or ccsetup564.zip from those official CCleaner links do they still trigger a PUABundler:Win32/PiriformBundler detection?

Thanks I had no idea this was so old, I’ll get the latest version

Hi fasttrack1966:

Be sure to post back if you run into problems with the update to CCleaner v6.30.

I forgot to mention in my previous post that you won’t be able to insert images until you’ve made more posts in the forum and your trust level has increased from New User / Basic (TL1) to Member (TL2). Piriform / Avast recently switched to a new software provider (Discourse) for the CCleaner forum platform so I’m not exactly sure how many posts you’ll have to make before you receive your Member (TL2) user badge.
