Why CCleaner proposed updating to an older driver version?

Hi,
Current Display Driver Ver. is 31.0.101.2140 from 05/11/2025.
Proposed update for Display Driver Ver. is 27.20.100.8280 from 19/04/2020.
This looks odd.
Please advise.
Thanks!
Harel

Hi @Harel_Hechter,
CCleaner uses Microsoft’s Driver ranks to determine which drivers to offer for update.
This is determined by different criteria, including date, driver manufacturer, and other factors.
So it may be that an older driver is offered if they have a better rank than a newer driver.
You can read more about how Microsoft ranks drivers in the article below.

Hi @Laurence_CCleaner,
Okay, but yet, I’m already using much newer versions for long time:

  • 31.0.101.2140, installed on 2026-01-24 (quite new)
  • 31.0.101.2137, installed on 2025-10-17
  • 31.0.101.2135, installed on 2025-04-01
  • 31.0.101.2130, installed on 2024-09-08
  • 31.0.101.2128, installed on 2024-06-01
  • 31.0.101.2127, installed on 2024-02-04
  • 31.0.101.2125, installed on 2023-06-18
  • 31.0.101.2121, installed on 2023-04-07
  • 31.0.101.2115, installed on 2022-12-31

Therefore, returning to the 27.20.100.8280 version dated 2020-04-19 still appears questionable, and especially in this case, in which the gap is huge.

In addition, 31.0.101.2140 is proposed and installed by Intel® Driver & Support Assistant.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time drivers update proposals found incorrect, and corrected only in the next CCleaner version.

It might be worth taking another look at this.

Thanks!
Harel

Remember that driver updates are often released to suit specific new hardware; hardware that you don’t have in your machine.

So just because a driver is ‘newer’ does not mean that is the best match for your particular hardware.

That has always been a problem when using any Driver Updater, they tend to offer the newest even if it isn’t suitable for your hardware.
It may not be an issue and the new driver may still work with your older hardware, but:
We have seen many case where the new driver is unsuitable for the older hardware in a users machine; so that hardware stops working properly and they have to roll back to the older driver version.

If CCleaner’s driver updater is now using the MS driver rankings and checking whether the driver you have is the best one for your particular hardware then that has to be an improvement.
(Hopefully we may stop getting posts in the vein of “Driver Updater broke my computer”, or at least not get as many as we used to).
