I must be missing which option it is, but which one clears the frequently used programs area in the Windows 7 start menu, between All Programs and the Pinned Programs area.
Or is there not a setting to reset that in ccleaner?

Try doing it by right-clicking Start\ Properties\ Start Menu\ Privacy\ untick ☐Store and display recently opened programs in the Start Menu.
There is. I believe it is "User Assist History" under Windows - Advanced
User Assist History did it, thanks!
A snag. User Assist History pre-clean analysis reported zero bytes for me. But it had so much history CC required 2 cleans to get all.
I think perhaps it reports nothing because the assist history is kept in the registry. Another reason we should have regkey output.

If true, right-click User Assist History analyze should be greyed out, instead of reporting zero bytes.
