What does System Restore do?

What exactly does the System Restore in CCleander do when you restore? Does it just fix the Windows system if it wasn't working? If I had some Word files that became corrupted, would system restore bring those back?

Thanks.

System restore section in CCLEaner allows you to remove individual restore points from the windows system restore list (this frees up space)

i just read the bottom of your post- i just closed my eyes and did the registry thing-there was quite a bit, too. i've been having trouble with my puter lately. by the way i'm not only a newbie but i'm PUTER ILLITERATE. i'm tired of "oops this link appears to be broken" and "internet explorer can't find that page" or whatever it says. i'm not sure what to "clean". my downloads are really slow, too. i've got no idea what most of the applications do- what is an Index.dat file? help, if you can. don't know how i got 2 avatars, sorry

The index.dat files are referring to Internet Explorer.

petey which operating system are you using, xp or vista?

Which anti virus and antispyware programs do you have?

Are they up to date and all scans clean?
