Welcome back to me, but it's all different!

Hello.

I used to be a fairly regular poster here at CCleaner, probably about a decade ago. I was Robbie back then.

Just a quick question really: were all the old accounts deactivated? I still have my old user details saved in my password manager but they no longer work. I realise some boards delete accounts that have’t been used for a while and I can’t remember when I last logged in (I think it may have been pre-covid and I logged in to post in a “Happy Christmas” thread).

Still, it’s good to see some names from back then that I remember (hazelnut, Nergal and nukecad in particular plus is Dennis still around?).

Has my old account gone forever? I attempted to login using my old details and couldn’t gain access. I’ve re-used the same email address to set up this account so there was definitely no match there. Plus the board looks completely different, like it’s had a complete overhaul.

I’ll try and make sure I don’t leave it another half a decade or whatever to make another post!

Hi @Robbie64
Following the last change of the underlying Forum Software, everyone had to register again.
Basically we followed a link in an email to re-verify ourselves.
Our old posts etc. were/are still there - although some attachments went missing and some links got broken, that always happens when a forum changes the software that it runs on.

The previous ‘Robbie’ account (with a Newcastle United badge) is still there.

I can also see on the moderator/admin page that you were emailed as ‘Robbie’ 11 hours ago, presumably that was the email on how to reactivate your old account?
It would have been sent when you tried to log in as ‘Robbie’ and would be sent to the email that you had registered with the forum.

The account is showing as ‘Activated’ so should be accessible, have you found/replied to that email now?
Can you log in as ‘Robbie’ now?

Let me know if you can’t find that email and/or you can’t login as Robbie, and I’ll see if I can do something from here.

Thanks for the reply nukecad.

That’s definitely my account (as Robbie, the Newcastle United badge is the giveaway!). However, when I tried to login I got a message “Incorrect username, email or password”. I then clicked on the option “Forgot password” but no email arrived. Same when I tried to use the other option available, to bypass password with a passkey. Again, no email arrived.

I then reregistered using the same email address and the registration was successful so I assumed that my old account must have been deactivated / deleted (it wouldn’t let me register as Robbie though, stating that the username was taken). I’ve logged out of this new account and tried to login under my old account, again I got an error message. I then chose the reset password option and it has linked the attempt at a password change to my new account.

I’m assuming that I’m locked out of my old account forever?

I can see that I last posted as Robbie on July 21, 2019. I had thought it was in pre-covid days so that’s a sign my memory is still working! Though for some reason I thought it was in a Happy Christmas thread. so therefore around December time.

If my account can be changed back to Robbie that would be great but if not, no problem. I should have logged in a bit more frequently than I have done in recent years.

I’ll have a look and see what I can do as a mod.

We do have some extra powers on this new platform, but I’m not sure if this is one of them.

For example the Robbie account shows as being ‘active’ at the moment and I have an option to deactivate it.
Would that mean that you then get another “reactivate account” email? I need to check some stuff.

I suppose it has to be asked - Are you still using the same email that “Robbie” was registered to?
After all it’s a long time ago that it was registered.
For some odd reason we mods can no longer see registered emails on this platform.

PS. I’m sure you know but don’t post your email in open sight.

I’m still using the same email account to which I registered my Robbie account in January 2006. I used it to register the Robbie64 account I’m posting under now when I couldn’t login under my old username. In hindsight I probably should have used another email address to register this new account, but I had hoped that by attempting to register another username under an already registered email, the account signup would have been rejected.

Edit to add: when I registered this new account (using my old email address), I was sent an email to confirm and activate the account. Apologies, I’d forgotten about this. I didn’t, however, get an email in connection with my old account when using the Forgot Password option. I gave it about half an hour before then registering this new account.

Did you attempt to login on the ‘Robbie’ account again?

The Admin panel is now showing that it was sent an email 12 hours ago.
ie. At about half eight last night if you are the UK.
Did you get an email from the forum at about that time? don’t forget to check the spam folder just in case.

PS. I have been doing some looking and it should be possible to merge the old and new accounts into one.
However that needs to be done by an admin (I can’t see the option myself).
I also think it would be best if both accounts were working before trying to merge them.

I did attempt to login again using my old username and again used the password reset procedure. Again, no email was actually received. I then did a forgotten password procedure with my new account and did get an email.

I don’t think I’m going to be able to get my old account working because the new account is using the same email address.

If the two accounts can be merged then that’s great. However, I can’t get any access to the old account to be able to do anything with it (eg login / logout). I can see my old account posts using the Search feature at the top of each page, so at least can still view all my old posts but obviously I can’t access my control panel for my old account, I can only access it for Robbie64.

Could you see if admin can merge the old and new accounts but if it can’t be done, then it’s not a problem.

Oops - it’s apology time!

I logged in to an email account I haven’t used for a while, to find some emails from CCleaner, all relating to my original Robbie account (which I’m now posting from).

Apologies nukecad, I thought I had registered my Robbie account under what was my then main email account. Looking at the registration emails I have from a number of website forums from 2005/2006 I can now see I was using an alternative email address for these websites.

Problem now solved, though I apologise for having taken so much of your time.

Robbie (the original!)

Robbie original, I will only be able to think of you as that now !!

Good to see you back although this place now is a shadow of its former self… no soul left

Hi hazelnut!

I noticed a few years ago that the forums here were a lot quieter. I think that’s the case for a lot of message boards now. I occassionally visit another tech forum that I signed up to around 20 years ago and it’s the same there. It’s less a community of regular posters and more just posters making one or two posts and then moving on. Times change, though not always for the best…
