Which do you guys think is better? I've been using VLC for ages, since I feel it has better windows support, but I have had to use MPlayer on several occasions for playback of certain file types.
Should I dump VLC for MPlayer?

I go for VLC.
VLC is the better all-around solution. I also have MPlayer (with MPUI) installed because there are some things that only it can play, and it's so light weight.
I use it mainly for .AVI and .MPEG files.
MPlayer has always played everything I've thrown at it, and like Foobar2000 for music, I love it's minimalist appearance and small footprint.
It also plays part downloaded video files, which is a huge timesaver for being able to check out the specifications and quality of a video file without downloading the entire file.
I have used MPlayer for quite some time and I'm very pleased with it. I use Spider Player for music and very pleased with that too.
Even better than both of those is KMPlayer!
I use MPUI with MPlayer but it just doesn't like HD video, which I use MPC HC for instead. Although I know that having WinXP isn't the best choice for playing back HD video which is part of the issue in of itself.
I have been thoroughly happy with KMPlayer (based on MPlayer) for a long time, plays everything and nothing else I've tried has come close to it

I used to prefer VLC but now I use MPlayer most of the time.
EDIT: I don't use MPlayer directly but use the SMPlayer frontend.

I've used VLC Portable and even the install version before but with some videos like WMV from record label sites it would often have issues - of course this was many versions ago. MPUI with MPlayer never gives me any issues, unless it's to do with HD video!
I too use MPUI with MPlayer. I should have mentioned MPUI in my original post.
I use Media Player Classic-Home Cinema with Haali Media Splitter and AC3 Filter (ac3filter.net). This is good for video and audio.
