Version 6.28.11279: What is the purpose of the 'software updater' function

version 6.28.11279 (64-bit)
Question 1:
What is the purpose of the ‘software updater’ function

Question 2:
Why does ‘software updater’ stop Windows updates and especially Windows Defender updates which is EXTREMELY undesirable

Question 3:
Why do I get the message that the updates of Office 2016 (KB5002620 and KB5002625) failed while I have Office 2021 installed.
NOTE: Brand new PC with Windows 11 Pro and Office 2021 installed.

1- CCleaners Software Updater (like any software updater) looks to see if there are new versions of the applications that you have installed on your machine.
(If you have CCleaner Pro then it can also update them for you).

2- CCleaners’ Software Updater does not prevent Windows Updater from working.
They do different jobs.

3- If Windows updater is telling you that KB-number updates have failed, (and you say that both Defender and Office updates are failing for you), then that is an issue with your Windows Updater, or possibly your Windows System.
Try using the Windows Update Troubleshooter to see if that will fix it.

PS. As for why Windows Updater offered you KB5002620 & KB5002625, which are ostensibly for Office 2016?
Those were security updates which could also be relevant to other Office versions, not just to 2016.

I disagree with you.
Windows update reports that the system is updated but ccleaner wants it to be updated.

I have made a screenshot showing ‘Windows-updates (2)’ (Dutch)

  • 202409 Preview cumulatieve update voor Windows 10 22H2
  • KB90830: Windows-programma voor het verwijderen van schadelijke software voor x64-systemen-V5.128

Translated to English

  • 202409 Preview Cumulative Update for Windows 10 22H2
  • KB90830: Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool for x64-based Systems-V5.128

Again it is UNACCEPTABLE that ccleaner is somehow blocking windows update.

Uninstall CCleaner (making a note first of you licence key if you have one)
Reboot.
Now see if Windows Updates run and install for you.
If they do, CCleaner was stopping them.
If they don’t, it is something to do with your machine.

In question 3 in your first post you asked:

Think about what you said there in question 3 and what it means -
If Windows Update is teling you that one or more KB updates that Windows Update has tried to install have failed then Windows Update is pretty obviously still running.

The 202409 that you say is on your screenshot also tells me that Windows Update ran towards the end of last month. It is the date of that update, ie. September 2024.
What you say tells me more that that, it is the KB5043131 Optional Update that was released on the 24th September (and that I installed on this machine on the 26th September).

Those Optional Updates do not install automatically, you have to choose to install them or not.
The fact that you did choose to do that also shows that your Windows Update is running - but that appears to have a problem.

I have already given you the link for how to check/repair Windows Updatet in my post above.
Have you run the Windows Update Troubleshooter?
If not then why not?

PS. If you have a screenshot then please post it here, so the we can see what you are seeing…
Just copy and paste it into your next post, or use the upload arrow at the top of the post editor.

I have the same kind of situation with my Windwos 11 Pro PC as with the Windows 10 Pro PC mentioned here before
Today, 10/10/24 Software Updater reports HIGH urgency

  • Security Update for Microsoft Office 2016 (KB5002635) 32-bit Edition
  • Security Intelligence Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus - KB22667702 (Version 1.419.436.0) - Current Channel (Broad)

BEFORE I clicked the [Update Selected] button I checked the Windows update history.

Windows update > Update history > Uninstall updates
– The list shown shows:
– Security update for Microsoft Office 2016 (KB5002635) 32-bit edition
– With the button on [Uninstall]

Windows update > Update history
Under the heading: Definition updates (14)
– The list shown shows:
– Security information update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus - KB22667702 (version 1.419.436.0) - Current channel (broad)
– The installation was completed on 10-10-2024

In short, the updates have already been installed by Windows updater and ccleaner reports that these updates must be installed.
Totally contradictory messages that make me very confused and so the question arises:
Who is right here: [Windows updater] or ccleaner [Update software]

Most probably Windows, I have seen the same thing myself earlier this week…

Once I told Software Updater to ‘Scan Again’ then it no longer showed the Windows Updates that had already been done.

It is a good idea to tell the Software Updater to ‘Scan Again’ when you open it because it may be showing you an older scan that is not quite up to date

It shouldn’t be like that and should do a new scan each time that you open it - but it doesn’t seem to be doing that fresh scan at the moment.
