I have a Canon A 590 Powershot digital camera. I was using a Lexar 4 GB hC Platinum II 60x card. I took about 30 pictures of a parade today, I got home and hooked the camera up to my PC to transfer the photos to Picasa. I think I was looking at some of the "tools" on the camera and I think I pressed the wrong thing about formatting. The next thing I know there are no images on the card. I did some searching and Recuva sounded like my best option. The only way I have to attach the card to the computer is with the Camera. The problem is that when I try to use Recuva I can't find the Camera. It shows up in "My Computer" but the closest I found is the option for media device or iPod. But it says there is nothing there. Any ideas would be appreciated.
You may need to somehow (I don't know the specifics of your camera) put the camera into a mode where it basically behaves like a dumb usb card reader.
When working with digital media cards, I always like to work with them in a separate reader.
And, depending how the camera formatted the card, you may be able to get them back. Recuva is a good choice. If the camera did a fast/quick format, chances are the pics are still there. If it did a complete/thorough format, they probably won't be there.
I think your problem is because Canon stores images in the RAW format, which Recuva doesn't yet handle.
Try the following data recovery tool.
MiniTool Power Data Recovery Free Edition:
Includes ...
CR2Canon RAW version 2. Photograph from a Canon camera.
CRW
Canon RAW. Photograph from a Canon camera.
Hope that helps.
EDIT: What Recuva can and can't do:
Thanks for the responses. I think when the stores open on Tuesday I will pick up a decent card reader for high speed cards and try some of the suggestions.
If a device lacks a drive letter when connected to your computer it's highly likely to be a MTP device and not support with Recuva or other recovery programs.
Recovering lost or deleted files requires direct read access to the file system unfortunately MTP does not implement this requirement.
If your memory card is removable then a USB card reader should be able to get around the read problem.
As for the "What Recuva can and can't do:" it needs some updating:
- Recuva cannot recover from MTP devices
- Recuva cannot recover files from a hard hard if the partition table is damaged / deleted or corrupted.

Sorry, I didn't write it, just refer people to it. Maybe pm'ing the devs with your observations would be a good idea, or put them into "Recuva Suggestions".
