Usually ccleaner free ALWAYS updates automatically for me. I ahve reimaged my windows 10 pro laptop which would have an older version of ccleaner on it. Usually after a few minutes it would update automatically for me.When I open it up and click on Check for updates on the bottom right hand corner it says a new version is available and BTW automatic updates are enabled. I click on update now and it goes through the green status bar as if its download something. It gets to 100% and will stay like that forever without updating to the newer version. Any ideas ?
Download a new installer from here: CCleaner - Download Builds
I would use the ‘Slim’ installer, the 3rd one down, it works slightly differently to the ‘Standard’ installer.
Both install the same CCleaner, they just do it a bit diffferenly so Slim can work when Standard isn’t doing…
Double click the downloaded file to do a reinstall of the latest version.
There is usually no need to uninstall your old CCleaner first, just install a new one and it will replace the old one.
Thx for the fast reply. I know I can do that but what I need to find out is why ccleaner free is NOT updating for me automatically.
What anti virus are you using?
When you restore a Windows image then everything has to get up to date again.
The older the image is the more there will be that needs to catch up.
Restoring an image is effectively sending your computers system and files back in time, and it then has to catch up to the present.
In this case I would suspect that the Windows Security/Defender hadn’t fully caught up yet with it’s more recent definitions…
So if it didn’t recognise the newer CCleaner version it would block it from being installed.
Hazelnut asks if you are using an AV/AM other than Defender- because if you are then that’s even more likely to be lagging behind in it’s definitions following an image restore.
Note that if the definitions still haven’t updated yet then the AV will still block the install.
