I ran CCleaner yesterday and did an uninstall of a Fax/Modem app. I have fios connection which uses a router so I figured I could get rid of this. Today, upon rebooting a "new hardware" msg comes up for PCI simple communication controller. In device manager, this item has a yellow exclamation point next to it (due to deletion of program I assume). Can I go to device mgr and delete this item so I won't get the msg every time I start system? Thanks for your help.

Well you may have uninstalled the software for your modem but have you removed it from your motherboard?
When Windows starts up it checks all devices that are plugged in to see if it has the software to drive them, sound card, graphics card, modem etc. If you've uninstalled it then it can't find anything. I would suggest you remove your computer cover and unplug the modem from the PCI slot. Put the cover back on and startup again, it shouldn't find it this time.
Thanks very much for the info. I think I have for a simpler solution (for me). I disabled the item in device manager and now the msg doesn't appear at boot. I am a low end intermediate pc user so opening the cover and delving around inside pc has always been problematic for me, unless pushed to the wall. Thanks again however.
I see you've taken the easy way out then.
