Unable to install ccleaner

I have Win 8.1 Every time I try to install the program, it says it cannot install

"Error opening file for writing"

Click abort to stop, retry to try again or ignore to skip this file.

None of those options work. I have to close it out through Task Manager. I've downloaded the program twice and tried it several times but it won't install.

I have Norton and Malwarbytes

you might need to rightclick on the file and select "properties" and then, there, click "unblock."

I'm wondering if this is because it's Windows 8.1?

(I've seen one other report, on another forum, of a problem installing the latest CCleaner on Win 8).

Please try using the 'Slim' installer, it works slightly differently but installs the same CCleaner.

It's the 3rd one down here: https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds

Please let us know if that 'Slim' installer will install CCleaner on Win 8.1 for you.

Thank you both of you but neither suggestion worked. One thing I hadn't mentioned is that I have had ccleaner on my system for years with no problems. I uninstalled it yesterday because when I tried to open it, it kept immediately closing. I thought uninstalling it then downloading the latest version to re-install would fix it. Now I can't get it to install at all.

Any other ideas?

Thank you in advance

Another thought is what antivirus are you running?

The 'closes immediately' behaviour you describe is typical of when an antivitus is blocking CCleaner.

(It was a problem for a few users who wer using a certain antivirus when CCleaner v5.89 was first released, but that was quickly patched within 24hrs so shouldn't be happening now).

Thank you Hazlenut. Your link with suggestions helped. What I did was search the system for any version of ccleaner running or stored on my system - nothing. Then, I went into the Control Panel/programs and looked there. I had previously had professional version plus the defragler, etc. When I saw these programs in the system under Piniform, I uninstalled them. Restarted my system then tried installing ccleaner and this time it worked!

Evidently, something in those add on programs from Piniform was blocking the system from reinstalling ccleaner.

On another note - anyone know why my screen name was changed by someone from EMN to EME?

User EMN was created yesterday with an mi.rr.com email address, user EME was created in March 2020 with a yahoo email address. They are separate entities.

As confusing as that is, thank you for the explanation. I'll try to figure it out on my end.

@kinzoo: Can you provide a bit more information? How are you going about trying to install CCleaner? Are you downloading the latest version from the CCleaner website, or trying to install an old version from your computer? What is the error message that you are seeing and/or what is happening when you are trying to open and/or install CCleaner?

Glad you got things sorted and thanks for posting back about the info you found about your old Pro version install. It may help someone else who has a similar issue.

It has always worked in the past.

When I click on the icon, nothing happens or opens.

When I click on the installer file, this is what I get.....

ccsetup589

Error! can't initialize plug-ins directory. Please try again later.

It will not let me uninstall the current version...

Ok, what does it say?

What anti-virus do you use?

EDIT...Have you done a full Restart of your machine lately? (not shutdown...Restart.)

ccsetup589

Error! can't initialize plug-ins directory. Please try again later.

Just switched from Window Defender to Malwarebytes...

Have restarted a hundred times...

Same results

Everything on laptop is up to date...

Perhaps your user profile is corrupt.

Are you able (as a test) to make a new administrator user account on the machine?

Boot into the new user and see if you are then able to install CCleaner.

If that does nothing, you can just boot into your usual admin account and delete the new user from Accounts.

I did as you suggested, same results.....
