Transferring Firefox 4 settings

I'll be getting a new computer soon and wondered what the best way to transfer all your Firefox 4 data (layout, settings, bookmarks, etc.) from your old PC to your new one.?

This is exactly what I do when going from our desktop PC to our laptop:

1. Clean using CCleaner.

2. Open your user profile Application Data folder (NOTE: It's a hidden folder so you may need to enable the view of "Hidden Files and Folders").

Example (Windows XP):

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Profile Name\Application Data

3. Right click the whole Mozilla folder and ZIP it (or which ever else file archiving format you prefer; 7z, RAR, etc.,).

4. Copy the ZIP file to a USB thumb drive or burn it onto a rewritable disc, etc., so you can take it to the new computer.

5. On the new computer unzip the ZIP archive into your user profile Application Data folder.

Example (Windows XP):

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Profile Name\Application Data

6. Install Firefox if it wasn't already installed, and all your bookmarks, settings, add-ons, etc., will automatically be restored.

7. Start Firefox, and then open from the menu at the top: Tools->Add-ons

Add-ons may or will have to fix some of your add-ons in order for them to function by restarting Firefox.

Edit: I re-edited this a few times to make it a bit easier for everyone to understand.

Use MozBackup (there's a portable version) : http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/

TY very much Andavari for the detailed instructions, I really appreciate it. I will be doing this sometime today - if I have a problem I'll let you know. I'll also be saving these instructions in case I need them in the future.

TY also Aethec, I'll use this if I have a problem with what Andavari posted.

My mistake, I neglected to mention that my old system was XP and my new system is Windows 7. I wasn't able to find a User Application Data folder in Windows 7. Research revealed that apparently you can't transfer Firefox settings etc. from XP to Windows 7. You can however from Vista to Windows 7. (see link below).

Just set up Firefox sync (built into FF 4 and found https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/firefox-sync/ for ff 3.x) to carry over cookies, preferences histiry and/or anything else you want

Sync it

Then setup firefox 4 on the new P.C. and sync it again with the same login

As per added instructions found here:

http://support.mozil...ync?s=sync&as=s'>http://support.mozil...ync?s=sync&as=s

and after that:

http://support.mozil...ync?s=sync&as=s

I was able to accomplish the task. Now my Firefox on my new Windows 7 computer is a copy of my Firefox on my old XP computer.

Thanks you for the help Nergal, I appreciate it!

No problem, I actually really like SYNC because I can bookmark pages on my portable PC and have them in my virtual Linux Box

Glad it worked
