Storgae space

I have a whole load of video clips, music and other files that I want to store somewhere, as my hard drive is rapidly filling up.

I know I can buy an external drive, but is there a facility whereby I can store my files online instead?

If so, what's the best place in terms of cost, size and security?

Whoops - looks like I can't even spell "storage" properly . . .

Im not sure. I guess you could open up a whole pile of gmail accounts (through google) and store your files all over the place there. I would just buy an external harddrive personally. they are cheap now, and handy.

Yeah and buying a hard drive would be cheaper in the long run versus paying for some online storage. There's nothing like having local copies!

AOL just bought xdrive and is offering 5gb of space for free.

Thats not a lot of space but you could get multiple accounts. :D

Cheater. :P:lol:

But if it works. ;)

cheater.

LOL

I haven't even tried xdrive yet.

If you were seriously going to use online storage it would probably be worth it to pay a little so that all your files are in one place. I think before AOL bought xdrive it was like $30 a year or something but I can't remember how much space you got.(and I don't see pricing anywhere on their site now). Honestly I would rather just have an external HD. :P

The only way I would use xdrive is if I couldn't keep up with a flashdrive(well I've lost about 3 of them. :P)

if you find one, mail it to me ;)

GMail only allows attachments of 10 megs.

You could use AMD Live's free Media Vault, and you can store 25 gigs worth online. Only disadvantage is that you are only allowed 1 gig of bandwith a month for the free version.

Fry's was selling a 500 gigabyte HITACHI 7200RPM, UltraDMA 16mb etc. etc. hard drive for only $150USD. Buy a good, cheap hard drive like that.

At that price, get two!

No kidding. Though at the time I was more interested in a good CPU/Mobo combo... relatively cheap ECS AM2/PCIE mobo with an AMD X2 4200+... I know ECS really sucks, but they're dirt cheap, and the CPU is worth the price of $180 by itself.

id say buy a new HD.

500GB cost around $200 US.

if you dont feel like doing that, you could always upload them to rapidshare or megaupload or even buy an account at one of those sites to make it easier :D

I got to thinking if someone was for instance a traveller an online storage for music and some files would be ideal because there'd be no need to lug a laptop/notebook around as many vacation spots will rent them or already provide them in the room.

Well I tried xdrive and its pretty neat. You don't need any software to use it but they offer something that will give you more options(I didn't try it yet). I might upload a couple of songs on there or something for when I'm not on my pc(but I usually carry my mp3 player in my car anyway).

I'm not saying its a good thing or anything(or saying you should do it) but I could see some covert file sharing going on with these things.
