Sound Loss

I keep having issues with sound loss for various applications, mostly Osu! and Firefox but sometimes others. There's no predictable pattern, but they (Osu! far more frequently than Firefox) sometimes just cut out entirely, and require an application restart to regain sound.

I'm at a loss for anything that'd cause this. Any ideas?

Dust?

I think its an issue with how windows assigns applications to sound profiles. It seems like it just randomly revokes it.

Maybe an old sound card not recognizing newer codecs?

The computer was just built a year ago, so that shouldnt be a problem

What sound hardware do you have?

I honestly don't recall the exact model, but an AMD sound card. This problem is recent though, and system file check turned up nothing.

I hate to ask this, but which Operating System are we talking about? :)

If Win 7 I wonder if it's anything to do with this ...

Default Sound Device being switched:

You don't say as to whether other programs are still producing sound OK during this glitch.

How to Repair an Intermittent Audio Device:

Yes it's Windows 7

I don't know what AV you are running, but I had a problem in the past with Avast muting or lowering the sound level.

I'm running MSSE, the problem is so intermittent that I can't trace it, and leaves no event in the event log. Gragh!

Nothing shows up in the event viewer (it just happened in the middle of an Osu! game) and no sound is output by the program on any of my sound channels.

Perhaps unplug your PC, pop open the PC case, pull out the soundcard, and then reinsert it.

It's driving me up the wall that it doesn't throw an event up in the event viewer when this happens. It's really annoying that it happens while playing Osu! since it is a sound based game.

I have decided to just completely re-install windows to combat this.

I hope you get back here in one piece, and with the glitch fixed.

Let us know.

:)

I'll have to wait some time- I need my computer every day for school work, I wont have an oppertunity to reinstall windows until December or so :( For now, I'm using my headphones/headsets until I get my stereo system from home later this week.

I always wear headphones on my computer, but I occasionally realise after 30 or 40 minutes that I haven't switched the music on. ;)

Anyways, it couldn't be a registry entry issue could it. Something like this where the problem was only on-line sounds ...

The intermittent ones are the worst to pin down it seems.

I think the problem lies with using monitor speakers

Winapp2, when you have multiple tabs open in Firefox, particularly, if each of them are a tab that utilizes audio (ie, game, youtube, etc), it is very common that the sound will be cut out from one or more of the tabs.

If you use more than 10 or so tabs, it becomes even more common to have phantom tabs that have no audio.

I am not certain how many tabs you open, or how many contain audio/music, but I find multiple tabs do cause loss of audio on some of the tabs, & progressively so, the more that you have open.

*I am unsure if this is a flash or a windows problem. Updated flash lately by chance?
