What do you do when CCleaner updater hangs up on an update and says not to close it? I waited near 2 hours and it hung on KB890830 near the end. Afraid to hard reboot PC but I think it’s the only option. Anybody else have any advice? Thanks in advance. dlg01
If an app (or even Windows itself) gets hung up then sometimes you have to ignore that ‘do not close / do not switch off’, there is nothing else that you can do.
If it’s just an app that is stuck then you can usually ‘End Task’ on it in Task Manager, or Restart your computer.
If it’s Windows itself that is stuck then sometimes that means the power button, and crossed fingers.
(Been there done that, many times, most regular computer users will have had to do it at some time).
Having said that- KB890830 is the Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT).
It downloads and runs automatically every month or every few months as part of the monthly ‘Patch Tuesday’ Windows Updates and it can take a couple of hours or more to run it’s scan.
Many of us are a bit puzzled about just why CCleaner is now offering Windows Updates in Software Updater.
After all, Windows updates the ones that you need automatically - unless you have turned that off in which case you won’t want CCleaner doing them either.
It’s probably best just to skip them in CCleaner and let Windows do them.
If/when CCleaner is offering you one go to Windows Updates and ‘Check for Updates’.
(Note that CCleaner will often offer updates to the Microsoft C++ redistrubutables. Whilst there may well be a new version of one of those Windows itself will not offer it to you unless you actually need it).
Thanks for the reply. I know very well about rebooting a hung server or desktop. My last 20 years of work were in a big pharma’s IT department as one of their top level engineers. And since Microsoft doesn’t support Windows 10 anymore, I would hate to cause a failed update to cause my PC not to start back up and then I have to fix it without their help. Not matter how much you are taught and certs. you get, you do have to have tech. support on occasion or having it makes a complex issue faster to resolve. I’m certainly not above asking for help. Too many out there know way more than I do. Although I know how to and can, it can be a pain to repair a busted Windows 10 OS. My hardware is not up to date for Windows 11 so I fear the day when I will have to build another PC, or just go buy a decent Lenovo business or gaming PC. I have used your product all these years along with Malwarebytes Pro real time version which I think should be on every PC on the planet. I bought their lifetime version license. Maybe you should run that thought up the flag pole to offer a lifetime license. Just a thought. I think many would purchase it. I highly recommend you and Malwarebytes Pro to my clients. And I also recommend to do a scan with the free version of SpyBots once a month or more to see what the others are missing if anything. My scans with SpyBot are very clean. That’s a sign my other 2 are working well. But back to my PC, I’m all good now except for that one item which I doubt I will need. I tried grabbing it from Microsoft and doing it manually, but it also hung and failed. I’m curious as to why it wouldn’t install, but not too worried about it.
Have a great week and day. You can close this ticket. Thanks again.

Many of us are a bit puzzled about just why CCleaner is now offering Windows Updates in Software Updater.
DLG adds, why not run up the flag pole the thought to just let CCleaner warn us there are MS Updates we need to install RATHER than trying to install them via a CCleaner operation? That’s not your job nor your department and it will cause you plenty of Helpdesk tickets you don’t want. We need to handle update and patches on our own. Many of us MCSEs turn auto updates OFF. We have to test them in a lab before we dispatch them. And typically we wait a month or more if Microsoft throws us a bad patch or update as they can shut down your entire network. And they sometimes do, even after our lab testing. Those days were very hectic for sure when your employer’s revenue is about 2 million dollars per hour 24x7. People get very upset when the network goes down… I’m so glad to be retired now, but miss the action. It was a blast at times. Just a thought I had after seeing you admit it to be a surprise to see CCleaner doing MS updates?? I’m confused too. See what the powers that be say if it’s safe to recommend anything. Plus, I would buy a lifetime license from you if I could. Another suggestion I might add and I think many of us would. I would recommend it to my clients.

I don’t know where you are getting that from, Win 10 is still supported and doesn’t become EoL until October 2025.
I’ve no idea why MSRT is playing up for you this month, but I wouldn’t bother too much about it, it will no doubt try again next Patch Tuesday.
I also use Malwarebytes, along with MalwareBytes Browser Guard which I consider essential on any PC, and Malwarebytes AdwCleaner for extra ocassional scans for adware.
However as CCleaner is part of the Gen Digital group, along with Norton and Avast/AVG then I doubt that you will see them bundling or offering MB. (Unless Gen buys MB too).
