slow registry scan

Hi All! I have been using the CCleaner registry scanner for a long time. Now all of a sudden after installing Firefox 3.0 and up (CCleaner worked fine on earlier versions of Firefox) the scanner has slowed to a snail's pace. I have used Revo Uninstaller to uninstall CCleaner and then reinstalled CCleaner but still the same thing. s.....l.....o......w.......!

Any ideas?

Its hard to imagine that the presence of FF would cause CC's registry scan to perform slowly. It would seem more likely that another process is 'active' possibly monitoring CC. Or another process that is reading/writting to the registry when CC is scanning. Or lastly, fragmentation.

What security or other applications are running in the background? Aside from FF what other applications have been installed (if any)? Which version of CC are you currently using and... OS + SP?

CCleaner v 2.12.660 (latest version), Win XP Pro SP2, FF 3.03 (latest)

There are several processes running. Is there a way I can copy the running processes so you can see them? I have not installed any new programs since CCleaner started scanning slowly.

I just timed a scan. It used to take about 15 seconds to scan. All of sudden it takes 3- 1/2 minutes. The only thing I've done is upgrade the FF. I was running FF 2.17. Thanks for your help.

You can open a command prompt Start, Run, then type the letters: cmd

Click OK or press enter.

When the command prompt opens copy and paste the code below into the command prompt (via right clicking)

wmic /output:c:\process.txt process get description,executablepath

Press enter

You will now have a text file located at C:\process.txt It will have all program/processes listed and the path.

Thanks Disk4mat!

Here is the test file. Can any one help? process.txt

If FF is closed, does CC still take a long time to scan? I should have asked that earlier but figured it wasnt running.

Otherwise nothing jumps out at me for the running processes. I was able to identify them. But we now know you have BitDefender and AdAware. 3 min. for CC to scan is a long time.

Have you tried isolating the portion of the registry thats causing the delay durring a scan? This may try your patience but in CC uncheck all the registry items. Start with 'Missing shared DLLs' and do a scan. (But dont fix the items) After it completes check the next box 'Unused file extensions' repeat scan and keep doing that going down the line.

Im thinking maybe the delay can be isolated to a particular operation. Maybe another user might have some insight or hit on something I didnt think of.

Yes FF is closed when i'm scanning. I'll try what you suggested by scanning one registry item at a time. Sounds like a good idea. Thanks Disk4mat!

I tried what you said. The first and third items down on the list were slow. Everything else scanned quickly.

So "Missing shared DLL's" and "ActiveX and Class Issues"? Does CC find many items after the scan? Shared DLL's is located in the registry under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs

CC looks at each entry and checks that the file exists on the drive. If you have numerous entries and your drive is fragmented I can see why CC would take some time completing the scan. If you havent defragged your drive lately you might give that a try.

I ran process monitor to see exactly what CC is doing durring this scan. Oddly having process monitor open caused my scan to take almost a minute. It normaly takes about 5 seconds.

Possibly BitDefender is monitoring CC's activity? Have you tried doing a registry scan in Safe Mode? That might further isolate the problem. Reboot and tap the F8 key and select Safe Mode from the boot menu.

Thanks Diskmat4. I give up. Nothing shows after the scans.
