Apparently Mcaffee bought siteadvisor recently(didnt know this). I was on Fileforum and saw that they now offer the program as a FF extension. It seems pretty good, I havent noticed any slow down from it and since its an extension it dosen't require any seperate programs to be running in the background. I had never tried this program in the past because I thought it was useless to have a seperate program running for this, but with this you dont have to run a program all the time.
I want to see what some of you think of it. I'm currently putting it through some tests and this weekend when I update the spyware free guide(yes I know I'm behind on that one) I might just add this in.
I just started using it today and so far I really like it. So far it's flagged two sites as yellow and one as red. These are sites I visit every day. After clicking on "View Site Details" it ends up the sites are flagged because people received excessive emails they considered spam after filling in an online form including their email address. It also lists the cookies the sites drop and has a chart indicating the safety of the links included on the web page.
I didn't notice any slow down.
Of course I'm on dialup so how much slower could it be...
Seems ok so far. One slight irritation though, it causes the Google Preview extension to show TWO preview windows for every search result - one for the result site itself and one for site advisor advice page on the result. Got round it by adding the Site Advisor preview windows as a filter in Adblock. One other minor thing, the status bar advice button could do with being a bit more colourful as there isn't much difference between the grey and green on this laptop screen.
I tried it with IE which it does slow down. Uninstalled after a week or so. It missed many bad sites but often flagged up sites as bad that were harmless.
I don't like it because of all the false positives. Many sites which at one time were blacklisted and are now safe get flagged.
I haven't used it enough to find lots of false positives yet. I did notice that if turns yellow on fileforum because they have links to adware software but not on download.com which has probably just as much if not more links to adware sponsered software.
