Should CCleaner Remove /Local Settings/Temp Files?

Hi,

I notice a TEMP folder which each user has which is located in:

DRIVE:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\USERX\LOCAL SETTINGS\TEMP\

Where UserX is any user on the system. It contains many .tmp files and some installers.

Shouldn't CCleaner be deleting this folder?

Just a suggestion! :)

By the way thanks for such a great product!

Tornado,

It does. When you hit "analyze", look at the list of files it pulls up. CCleaner is user specific though, meaning it will only clean those files from the active user account that you are logged into.

Hope this helps!

Keith

Welcome to Piriform tornado.

No it doesn't delete the folder it just deletes all files and sub folders in this folder. The folder is used by a lot of Windows apps there it needs to be there. ;)

Thanks Keith and Keith. :)

I thought i'd let it play out for a few days and see if they were removed after a certain time-frame, but there are still files in:

/myuser/local settings/temp

from say the 5th of March, and I have used CCleaner numerous times since then.

Any ideas?

I don't think CCleaner does touch that particular folder. It cleans Temp Internet Files, Application Data, Index.dat stuff in that location but with the latest version of CCleaner that Temp folder on my PC isn't touched.

The reason is what Keithuk has stated. That temp folder is used by various applications such as Avast, and there will be stuff in there that can't be deleted as it's being used at the time.

For that reason I doubt if it will be integrated into CCleaners routines, which leaves you the option of using CCleaners "Include" feature. "CCleaner\Options\Include File or Folders", and check the "Custom Files And Folders" box for it to work.

But I would be careful what you remove from there. I'd hate you to break something. :)

Yeah sorry, I didn't mean delete, just clean the folder.

It cleans that folder for me on XP Pro except for the files that are in use and I haven't had a problem yet.

Well for some reason, right after this post it did clean the folder out, well the old files from the 5th anyway!

I notice i have a check in the box:

"Only delete files in Windows temp folders older than 48 hours"

So I assume this folder is classed as a Windows temp folder.

Some of these files were from the 5th, at lot longer than 48hours, wonder why it randomly chose to delete them yesterday. I cannot imagine them being in a process as it contained some old installers/patches and other random files.

Oh well at least it cleans it out when it's ready that's all that matters :)

For whatever reason, that folder isn't touched at all on my PC. Strange, but I'll live with that.

Bonjour,

For whatever reason, that folder isn't touched at all on my PC. Strange, but I'll live with that.

You might have to check if the user environment variables are properly set ?

[ For Windows XP :

"
My computer
" properties / "
Advanced
" tab / "
Environment variables
" :

TEMP
and
TMP
variables can be set either for the current user or for the whole system)

(or whatever the items might be called in your language) ]

CCleaner seems to clean the according folders here. We decided to point the TEMP and TMP variables to "%SystemDrive%\TEMP" for all of our computers, and to "D:\TEMP" (when it exists) for all the users.

Some files (currently used and locked ones probably) are indeed left by CCleaner after a cleaning, though.

Have a nice day.
