Running Recuva on a dd image

I have a really borked usb key, so I took a complete image of the disk using dd on a Debian linux. I ran some other recovery tools on that image, but didn't find the file I was looking for. In messing with Recuva on my old XP box, it doesn't appear that I can run the program on a specific file (usbkey.img - my dd image), only on mounted filesystems (i.e. C:, D:, E:, etc).

Is there either a way to make Recuva load a raw filesystem image (i.e. the dd copy) or to allow XP to mount the filesystem image as a drive? The usb key itself appears to have completely bit the dust (the light on the drive doesn't come on when plugged in anymore), so I think this image is my only shot.

This may or may not work (recuva sees the drive but I've not tried an actual disc in it)

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try it out, but I suspect the usb key image is too big (256MB) and vfd appears to only work on images of floppy disks. I'm also going to see if I can beat Virtual Clone Drive into submission, but it is geared toward *.iso files.

When I'm editing my raw QEMU images I use ImDisk Virtual Disk Driver which is also Recuva and Defraggler compatible. :)

Perhaps Macrium could make an image file of your key.

Macrium is able to mount image files that it has created.
