Does Recuva restore directory structure?
It does if, in Advanced Mode, you go to Options/Actions and check the box marked Restore Folder Structure.
Why is this off by default?
If you're talking about Restore Folder Structure, it's because it's a pain in the backside for those who don't want it. However once you check the box it remains checked.

Wow, and I thought it was a pain in the backside and frontside not having this option checked.
This one feature is what frustrates me the most with recovery software. Many of them do not fully disclose whether their software is capable of it, and if it does, they don't make it clear if there is an option to select or if it is on by default. Thankfully, Recuva is not one of them.
