From A Very Apprehensive Newbie - When I run the Registry section of CCLeaner it ? of course ? produces a great long list of items requiring attention - none of which mean a thing to me. It may as well be in Russian!
So exactly what do I do next?

If you choose to clean the items you will be offered the choice of making a backup of the registry entries you are going to clean.
This will be put by default in 'my documents' Then, if there is a problem with anything after the reg clean, you can right-click on the backup and select merge. It will put the reg items back.

Have you been having any problems with your computer lately?
Any virus/malware problems?
Many thanks.
Is it posssible to outline what problems I might encounter after cleanign the registry?

Hi Hazelnut
Everytime I try to "Merge" my backed up registry files I get an error message "Cannot import C:\Users\Myname\Documents\registrychanges.reg: Error accessing the registry" Can you help or advise me please?

I just changed the file-name when I originally ran registry. And then again after I tried several times to merge the file (I shortened it in case it was to long) Thanks very much Hazelnut, I will try you link.

I read it but I don't think any of those solutions apply as I only changed the name of the file. I'm not sure that is classed as a "modification"???
Well folks - the above is precisely the type of situation that makes me very reluctant to use the Registry cleaner function. All well over my head. Not very encouraging I must say.
fred the registry is a place where, unless you know what you are doing, is best left alone.
Having said that many people, including myself, have used the registry cleaner part and never had any problems afterwards.
Just because the registry cleaner bit is included within the program, it doesn't mean that you HAVE to use it
I - a long-time user of CCleaner - have never used the registry cleaning portion of it. I simply do not believe in "registry cleaning".
The Windows registry is a database with a lot of entries. Some may be redundant, some may be obsolete, some may be unneeded, and some may even be conflicting in one way or another. But cleaning these entries out will not make any difference to Windows' performance, nor will it save a lot of space on your HD (a few KB perhaps).
I am one that just leaves the registry alone, unless something really needs to be fixed. And then I will do it manually.
Whatever I do to the registry, I will never start it without taking a full registry backup first, using ERUNT.
