Registry backup and restore

I've been setting up my wife's new HP laptop (Vista Home Premium with SP1)and part of that setup was installing CCleaner. After a week of successful operation, which included installing programs like Office 2007, Quicken 2007 (she didn't want to upgrade quicken because she's used to 2007), etc., as well as uninstalling some of the freebie trial offers that come pre-loaded, I ran CCleaner to get rid of the detritus left behind. I also cleaned the registry, backing it up first.

A day or two later, after an automatic Windows Update, I got the blue screen of death with the message that Windows had a conflict with an unidentified driver. Promptly 30 seconds after re-booting, it happened again. . .and again. . .! So I went to System Restore and to a restore point from several days earlier, and that cured it. . . until Windows downloaded the next day's automatic update, and the whole problem re-occurred. I stopped the automatic updates from Windows, and again restored to a point several days earlier, and everything's fine. But no new updates since then, which is probably not wise.

Two questions:

1)Is it possible in running CCleaner, I accidentally deleted a file or a driver or a registry key content that was needed, or is it more likely to be a conflict with Skype or Quicken 2007 which are the last two programs I installed prior to the problem?

2)Where does CCleaner store the registry backup and how do I get it back if I want to restore it to the way it was before I cleaned it?

Thanks for any help.

Hi beaufort. :)

Don't know the answer to #1, but for #2 look here. It says "...By default, CCleaner stores these backups in your My Documents folder."

I changed the folder in which CCleaner stores backups to "...backups\CCbackups" by simply creating that folder and telling ccleaner to store there, and it has done so ever since.

A backup will be named something like cc_20090828_173402.reg. By default they start with cc_ and end with .reg. You could search by name.

Thanks! I'll try that first.
