reg key access denial

I was having issues with adobe reader not working (v9.1), tried to uninstall and got error message access denied to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\MSFS] , there are two other forlers in the same key, 3 all together MSFS, IMAIL, and MAPI. I tried to alter permissions to no avail. then, manually deleted all files , ran ccleaner. reg keys still exist, as they were not flagged by ccleaner and are preventing reinstall of adobe reader. I know other readers are available, but would like to resolve this issue. thanks.

Hi awakenow, and welcome to Piriform.

There are a few references to this on other forums ...

... but I was wondering if you've tried deleting the key in Safe Mode?

As suggested in that link, you may also be able to repair permissions with "Dial-a-fix".

Sorry about that, my bad. I should have asked which OS you used.

Have you looked at "How to Take Ownership of an Item in Vista"?

Yes, at first the dialog box says you don't have permission to view the permissions (even tho logged in as admin), but that you can change them. after changing them for your group and user, the files are still inaccessible to delete.

Have you tried downloading the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility?

You can use the utility to remove installation information for programs that were installed by using Windows Installer

Download it

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;290301

Install the Clean Up program.

Now run the Clean Up Utility program by clicking Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up

In the list of program that the utility offers find Acrobat Reader, click once on it to select its line, then click the 'Remove' button.

Worth a try anyway.

So you're denied access to just this reg entry? Here are two interesting tidbits that might work for you (both the same thing, one is more complex:

Start regedit with admin privileges and try taking ownership of the key:

Right-click key > Permissions > Advanced > Owner tab.

The current owner will be listed. Where it says 'Change owner to'

select your name or Administrators, select 'Replace owner on sub containers and objects'

and Apply.

If it works you should be able to edit permissions now.

Run the Registry Editor program (regedit.exe) and navigate to the key. Right-click and select 'Permissions'. Then make sure that the Administrators group has 'Full Control'.
RegASSASSIN is a portable application which allows you to remove registry keys by resetting the keys' permissions and then deleting it. Please use with caution as deleting critical registry keys may cause system errors.

It sounds like a similar problem to the one I posted about recently, where changing ownership or permissions makes no difference. In my case it was an installed program that was locking a registry key. While I wasn't after deleting the key I was after being able to make changes to that key which I wasn't able to do in normal mode.

In the end I had to use a process of elimination but a starting point was to boot into Safe Mode where I was able to change the entries in the registry key. I then ran msconfig - in Safe Mode - and disabled all Services and Startup Items (choosing the Selective Startup option) and then one by one re-enabled each Service and Startup item until I found the problem. It was a frustrating and time consuming process but I got there in the end...
