There is not a lot to go on there.
What Windows version are you using?
Are you using an Antivirus other than Windows Security/Defender?
What type of scan are you using in Recuva? The wizard or the advanced options?
How far are you getting?
Are you trying to recover deleted or non-deleted files? (There is a particular method to use for recovering the non-deleted files from a drive that has been reformatted).
Ah sorry, Windows 10 no other AV, I am trying to recover non-deleted files from a reformatted drive (Quick formet) and so I am selecting recover all files from the drive then when I start the recovery process, it shuts down as soon as it starts stage 1 of 3. This happens if I use the wizard or not.
Hmm, Had the drive crashed and/or become RAW? Is that why you reformatted it?
It may be a faulty/damaged drive and so is crashing again each time that Recuva tries to access it.
If you have quick formatted it then presumably Windows can see it, so what happens if you right-click it in File Explorer and look at Properties?
Anyway if it's the non-deleted files that you want then as I say there is a particular method that you have to use for that.
See this guide, there is also a video attached (obviously you won't need to quick-reformat if it's already done):
AS well as nukecad's advice, can I ask if you have RESTARTED your machine with the external drive plugged in?
ok thanks for that, yes I did restart with the external hdd plugged in, windows explorer can see it and thinks there's nothing on it. I've just been trying Testdisk and it seems to copy some of the files but then seems to stop and just sits there!
I've got it to work by selecting Scan Files from the drop down on 'Scan' and it appears to be working now. Thanks for the advice.
