Recuva has encountered a problem and needs to close

Running Recuva v1.44.778 on Win XP Professional SP3

Launched Recuva (not using the wizard) and selected Scan

The product crashes every time, in the same place, at:

Stage 2 of 3: analyzing damage

current progress: 81%

CPU usage spikes during this stage, ranging between 80% and 100%

10-15 minutes later, a window launches with the following message:

"Recuva has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I then ran the Recuva executable from the Run dialog using the Debug option.

"C:\Program Files\Recuva\Recuva.exe" /debug
