Recuva freezes - if it even recognises the M2 Card

Hi all,

I'm just looking for some suggestions on my corrupted (I think!) M2 card.

Recently my Sony phone froze, and all the contents of my M2 card vanished. When I it put into a card reader (which I've tested with another card), Windows only sometimes recognises it, but it causes Windows to slow down/freeze and according to Windows there's nothing there. The Device Manager says that the Card Reader 'needs troubleshooting', but

The same goes for Recuva. When it eventually does recognise the drive letter, a scan causes the program to freeze. Another program, Remo's 'Photo Recover' does recognise the drive and its capacity - but can't do much else.

Any ideas?

Sounds like your card may have experienced some form of MFT corruption, causing the content listing to be skewed & unavailable.

You could try running scandisk under Windows to see if that can repair the disk.

Usually, a re-format of the card will restore data capacity, but it will blank the card & there will be no data. Sometimes, though, this can be beneficial if the MFT is corrupted enough to be unrecognizable. It can make it easier to recover files, because of restoring the ability to "see" the card, & thus scan for deleted files. Mixed bag. Sometimes this still doesn't work to recover your files.

Only recommended if you don't have anything important to lose on the card.

In the event that the card has run through the used lifecycle & is needing replacement, that could be something to check into, but I would see about a way to repair/format the card before having to buy a new card.
