I cut and pasted a word file (which was not created on the computer, transferred from external) from computer to USB drive and lost the drive. Can I recover file from computer using recuva?

You should be able to. If you can't find it in the specified drive, it should be in one of the shadow copied drive. Good luck!
There is another tool, which is more efficient in recovering Word file or other files from all the storage devices.
