Recover chunks of files at a time

I'm recovering files from an external hard drive and it is very large, so large that the hard drive space in my computer wont hold all the files. Is there a way to download portions of the files I want to recover, make some room, go back and then get some more files? I've tried using the recover checked options but it keeps telling me I need the full terabyte, and I know i selected no where near that many files. Thanks in advance

Hi Flowulf, and welcome to the forum.

How do you have Recuva set up initially?

I always have the option "Tree View" selected in Options\General\View Mode", and Recuva simply recovers the files and or folders for which I have checked the boxes. At a guess I would imagine Recuva would only look for sufficient disk space to recover those files.

But, I haven't been in the position of having to recover more files than I have space for, so I haven't had the opportunity of hitting that issue.

I also have the option "Restore Folder Structure" set in "Options\Advanced" but I have no idea as to whether that would change Recuva's behaviour in your circumstances.

If your set up is different, and changing it doesn't make a difference, then you could try scanning for a particular file type, such as jpg, and Recuva will only display those files. And then scan for a different file-type on your next scan.

By the way you can change the "view" and "folder structure" options and enter a "file type" without having to rescan if you're already holding onto a scan. The display will change to the new setting/s. Remember to put a dot in front of the file type otherwise Recuva will pick out any instance of those letters.

That's the best I've got, but one of the other guys may have experienced this and I'm sure if that's the case they'll contribute to the topic.

I figured out a way. I used Tree View like DennisD suggested and using the actual file structures I was able to locate and pick out the things I wanted. Since recover Checked didn't work for me I just things at a time with the Recover Highlighted option. Its too bad that the Recovery Checked doesn't work.

Wasn't there something similar to this a month or so ago, requiring far more space to recover that the actual size of the disk? I can't seem to find it, I'll look again later.

Just out of curiosity, if you only check a few items and select "Recover", does it actually stop you from recovering as opposed to just warning you that you need a certain size to recover to?

If it stops you recovering a few files then that's crazy, so I'll check this out with the devs.

It would be useful if you would supply your Operating System and version of Recuva.

Thanks.

Found it, here http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=39124

The gist of it seems to be that if you run a scan with Scan for Non-Deleted Files checked, then try to recover the whole disk, Recuva asks for 7 or 8 times the actual amount of data to be recovered. I don't know whether this is your problem. If it is then don't scan with Scan for Non-D etc checked.
