Ran CCleaner now Remote Desktop (RDP) no longer works (Win 7)

Hi all and thank you to anyone willing to try and help. At my work I have both a desktop and laptop which I used RDP to remote into one or the other and vice versa. I ran CCleaner on my desktop and now I can no longer remote from the desktop out to my laptop (or any other computer on the network for that matter). I am able to remote into the desktop from any of the other computers I have tried. The behavior is strange in that it doesn't give me any sort of error message. When I click remote desktop it gives me the screen to put in which computer I am trying to connect to. Once I do that it then pops up with the Enter Your Credentials dialog. I enter in my credentials here and this dialog disappears and nothing happens.

Unfortunately I was not very careful in seeing exactly what was checked before I clicked the clean button however I didn't do anything special so I believe it would just be the default settings which were checked. Does anyone have an idea of what I can do to fix? Steps I have tried to fix (mostly from google results)

  • tried SFC /SCANNOW which found nothing.
  • ran malwarebytes which also found nothing.
  • tried renaming the Default.rdp hidden file under Documents so that it will create a new one which it has but still no luck.
  • tried going into the MMC dialog then going into Certificate Console (for Local Computer) and deleting the certificate listed under Remote Desktop. This did not recreate a new one when I tried to login. I had backed it up first so I went ahead and put it back.

I am totally at a loss and I really need the RDP (use it almost daily). A total rebuild would be a complete nightmare so I am hoping to avoid that. Again any help would be so greatly appreciated. Thanks, rm

I would first recommend that you restore the CCleaner rules to the default set. You can do this by right-clicking on the 'Windows' and 'Applications' tabs and selecting Restore default state

doing a bit a Google researching, some have found unticking the Printer checkbox in RDP settings helped them.

do you have the latest RDP update for Win7; https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2592687/remote-desktop-protocol-rdp-8-0-update-for-windows-7-and-windows-serve
