Hi, I used to use ccleaner way back in '06 and loved it. Recently I've started using it again and am completely speechless at the new features such as WFS and the MFT cleaner.
I just had a question regarding Emule and its appearance in the ccleaner options: if Emule is on your system will it always appear in the applications>internet section or are there cases where it wouldn't appear? I ask because I recently sold an old HD (it had a very slow RPM so I upgraded) and I just ticked every single box on ccleaner, including the NSA security wiping.
The problem is I don't remember if I ticked Emule (file hashes) or not. On my new system I noticed Emule (file hashes) are not ticked by default so I had a moment of panic trying to remember if I had ticked it or not, or even if emule appeared in the applications list. Like I said I ticked everything that was tickable and then I did a WFS and MFT clean afterwards.
TL;DR does emule always appear in the applications tab under internet or are there cases where due to individual system configurations it may not appear there?
I should add I had emule installed in the default location and it stored known.met under Appdata>local>emule>config. I was running windows 7 professional on that system.
I wish I could remember if I'd seen it but I definitely remember ticking all the boxes I could find.
Thanks for your help, apologies for the long post.
emule will appear on cceleaner if a windows install has HKCurrentUser\Software\eMule
in the registry
I see, but is there any instance, or could there be some occasion, where a windows 7 install might not have HKCurrentUser\Software\eMule in the registry?
I was the only person who used the system so there was only one account on it but I don't remember if I installed emule from scratch or if I had simply upgraded it automatically.
I'm really paranoid because potentially my known.met file could be recoverable so people could see all the copyrighted material I downloaded, amongst other things.
unless you used http://www.pendriveapps.com/emule-portable-p2p-filesharing/ portable emule it is 100% (99.9999999999999999) impossible for emule to run without that regkey however only emule search is checked off by default file hash is unchecked unless checked off by the person running ccleaner.
Might I ask why you did not format this machine back to factory state?
I've formatted it as well and installed Ubuntu on it to give it a revitalised feel, but i know all too well the tenacity of data and how it longs to be rediscovered so I just thought I'd play it safe. I thought of using DBAN but that seemed a bit extreme so I just used CCleaner. It's not as though I have state secrets hidden on my hard drive.
Slightly off-topic here but you seem very knowledgable so I'll throw this out too: I'm selling an external hard drive which I used extensively for the last 5 years, it's 350gb and was always formatted to FAT32. I used WFS and Wipe MFT on it as well. I'm sure this is sufficient to destroy the data but what about filenames/directories? The MFT is just on NTFS drives correct? FAT32 I understand is more primitive so would I be right in thinking filling the directory up with random data as WFS does would be sufficient to remove any lingering file names?
Thanks so much for your help! I've tried looking on google but my specific query has not been answered.
