As usual I'll wait a good while before applying the update.
As of late I don't necessarily like the changes in PS3's version 3+ firmware updates. Although the ability to play more video formats is a nice addition, albeit they're pretty damned slow to offer support for other formats, and I still await support for MKV and such.
I'm not a PS3 owner, yet, but how are you fixed if you have a firmware updating glitch?
I'm assuming you can't stick a BartPE disk in and fix it.

Factory service repair.
I don't apply the updates unless a game needs it, or if I find out reading online that they've added support for other video formats, etc. For games that need a new firmware version to operate it's already included on the game disc anyways.
I actually need a secondary backup PS3 because if mine went kaput I'd truly be lost without it!
An idea would be an Operating System reinstallation disk supplied with the PS3, just in case their firmware updates screw things up. I'd be terrified to try it anyway.
Knowing how paranoid these companies are, it could always be locked to the PS3 it came with.

It has its own protected/encrypted partition with their "OS" built in. It's very simple to wipe the thing clean if doing a quick format and it will restore everything to a like-new state without anything on the users hard disk. I did that a few months ago myself to remove a ton of junk like the very un-fun Grand Theft Auto 4.
However if it won't boot from a botched firmware update no amount of formatting would change that to my knowledge, and BartPE would be completely useless on it.
Going against what I usually do I applied the update today. And all is good, then again none of the updates have ever given me any issues.
You bit the bullet and survived.
Good to hear.
