That will happen if you have uninstalled CCleaner before installing the update.
Thanks for your answer. But that's exactly what I didn't do. The auto updater updates the product.
I don't know why it was asking you then?
I have seen similar before, and even had this happen to me, back in November 2023.
There are a couple of files in the CCleaner folder that contain your registration status, if one of those files is missing/damaged for whatever reason then CCleaner shows as not registered and you have to enter your key to register it as Pro. (which re-creates those files).
In my case one of the files had just dissappeared for some reason, so I had to re-register.
Can I ask how many characters, including dashes, your key has, is it 24 or 20?
That could be relevant here.
Don't post your key of course, just how many characters it is.
Yes of course. My key has 18 characters. I asked the question because I don't know how many times I can activate the product with the key.. Maybe I should backup the CCleaner.dat.
That's a 'new style' key (18 characters and two dashes = 20) so you should have 'CCleaner.lic' rather than 'CCleaner.dat'.
There is also an associated '<em>branding.dll</em>' which I think you still have whichever the other one is.
You can back them up if you want to, but it's usually just as easy to copy/paste your key into CCleaner again if needed.
I wouldn't worry about the number of times you use the key, I'm always uninstalling and reinstalling CCleaner when testing things for user questions/reports here.
So I've used the same key to activate CCleaner, on the same 2 laptops, hundreds if not thousands of times.
As long as you are not using the key on more devices than your subscription is valid for then it isn't a problem.
Do let us know if for any reason it does ask you to activate again, that would definitely be an indication of a possible bug somewhere.
PS. The 'old style' keys are being gradually phased out but there are plenty still in use.
(That has occasionally caused a problem when the developers 'forget' that there are still some old style key in use, as happened back in 2023 and they had to patch it).
Danke für die ausführliche Hilfe. ?
