My desktop came with a preloaded operating system (xp-all legal).
I also got the disks that they sent with it. there are three of them.
OK, so is it possible to somehow make a disk or disks of my operating system, with all preloaded service packs and programs that I have installed, so that if (when) my hard drive goes, i can simply pop in the disk (s) and run and install them so i dont have to spend like 3 days configuring everything?
GOOD question. EXPecially now that XP is a goner. I have looked around a bit, cannot find any answers that seem trustworthy, cannot afford to experiment. Still looking.

The first thing I would do if it isn't fixed to the side of your computer is get your CD-key. Belarc adviser will reveal it for you, and I'm sure there are other programs as well. You can use a program like Norton Ghost to make an image of your hard drive, and burn that to a disc, and if you run into errors, restore the hard drive to that image.
Yeah I have my key. So would Acronis True Image work to save all my programs and such?
I know that my 40 gb hd on my desktop is degrading, so what I would like to do is take one of my 250 gb externals, and install it in the computer, and then put all my info on it-but i dont want to have to reinstall windows, and all my programs- it takes forever to tweak everything.
