Why many experts recommend the portable version?
What is different cleaning performed than the version installed on the system?
Or are they just stupid?

not stupid, just personal preference.
as far as cleaning goes, either the slim, portable or normal build all do the same.
the portable build's attraction is that it can be put on a USB stick and simply run from there - no need to install.
this is handy if you have programs and want to carry them around from PC to PC but don't want to install them on the clients PC.
