PC went into hibernation during defrag!

Hi there,

My PC went into hibernation during defrag. The computer has since resumed without apparent problem but it is still defragging so I have had no chance to analyse my drive for damage. My questions are:

1 - Will the computer going into hibernation during defrag cause any problems with the the integrity of the files on the drive?

2 - Is there any way of reliably checking that my files are intact and undamaged?

Thanks.

Hibernating your computer during a defrag shouldn't cause any harm because it would simply halt any further disk activity from Defraggler and continue where it left off coming out of hibernation.

Disk changes on an NTFS drive are not seen until they are committed therefore if a file had failed to completely move (i.e. power outage) then it would revert back to it's original state.

If you want to check your drive for errors then: Start, Run, "chkdsk.exe /f"

Thanks for the reassurance redhawk. I had visions of losing my precious music collection!

Incidentally I also encountered the Volume Shadow Copy problem in that the size of the volume on the drive doubled after defrag. This was not fixed by the disc cleanup utility. Instead I needed to go into Control Panel -> System -> System Protection -> Turn off system protection / delete all restore points / set disc space useage to 0. (This has been reported elsewhere in these forums). This returned things back to a useable size. From there I can re enable system protection and start again. I think the volume shadow copy service needs to be switched off (in services) prior to defrag - does anyone know if this works?

Thanks.
