Optional Update KB 2852386 (A Must Have)

I know some people are reluctant to install "Optional Updates". Because some of those Updates have a "questionable" reputation. But there's one Update that is - IMO - actually a "Must Install". And that's KB 2852386. After installation it will enables the user to free up A LOT OF EXTRA (!!!) disk space. And I am talking GBs.

I posted this info previously on this forum (buried deeply in one of the threads) but I thought it would benefit more Win 7 & Windows Server users who regularly visit this forum.

with my experience... after fresh installed w7 pro and a few updates after the convenience rollup was the free disk space only a few MB (~50)

- Before MS started to release "Cumulative Security Updates" for IE, one had to install A LOT OF IE updates each time one re-installed Win 7. In those days I was able to reduce the "winsxs" folder by some 2 GB.

- Now one "Cumulative Security Update" suffices. And that means A LOT OF "bloatware" less in the "winsxs" folder. And I am not surprised to see that after installation of the "Convenience rollup" the "winsxs" grows less in comparison with installing A LOT OF separate updates.

- Didn't install the "Convenience Update" yet. I want to see which updates MS offers without that large Update.

- But it's good to hear/know that this one update is included in the "Conveniemce Rollup".

- Users of the "paid for" ( $30) version of "Tweaking's Windows Repair" are able to increase the amount of locations that are cleaned with that "Disk Clean Up" tool.

- Used the "Disk Clean Up" tool today and it shrank the infamous "Winsxs" (sub-)folder by over 800 Mb.

- After using "MRU Blaster" (https://www.brightfort.com/mrudownload.html) and then "Eusing's Registry Defrag" (http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_defrag/registry_defrag.htm) the total size of all registry hives shrank by some 20 Mb (from about 143 Mb down to about 122 Mb). Not too bad.

- The size of the "Winsxs" (sub-)folders is still a staggering 9,3 GB. Ouch.

On Windows 10 (and possibly 8.1), I believe Windows automatically compacts the registry for you now, because I use to use Little Registry Optimizer on Windows 7, but since I switched to Windows 10, I never need to compact my registry anymore. Also, Windows 8.1/10 has the "Clean system files" by default, too.

- Yes, in Win 8 & Win 10 the OS automatically reduces the size of the registry after 30 days. I have no experience with it because I am still using Win 7.

But do those commands also reduce the size of registry ? The article doesn't mention the registry at all. Does anyone have more info on that ?
