Are cookies even really a threat?
Is there a way to set up my computer or stop all the same daily threats?
1. An ad blocker for your browser which also eliminates the cookies and adds a better functionality of blocking sites altogether.
If you use Firefox there's Adblock Plus.
For other browsers which I don't use such as Internet Explorer, Opera, and Chrome based browsers someone else may chime in on what to use in them.
2. MVPS HOSTS file will block tons of junk including ad sites, and malware sites.

However, if you are using just regular Google Chrome, or Chromium, you will need to use one of their adblock extensions. What do you recommend for IE 8? I know alot of techs don't like it but I haven't had many issues with them.

Nice one. That's exactly the answer I would have given.
But if that was a serious question I would have have given you a serious answer, as we can't assume that other people waste as much of their lives as we do in this weird and wonderful world of invisible friends, and know all the wondrous stuff we do.

Best to keep to one subject per thread, And not really a good idea to be starting one on the browser wars, They never come to much only repeat what has been said hundreds of times and don't get people any where. Not to mention boring imo....
There's cookies and then there's cookies.
Most of the tracking cookies are relatively harmless, (famous last words), but some of them like the recently mentioned 2o7 has so many variations and entries in the host file it wouldn't surprise me if it actually slowed your PC down.
@ident Just joking in the post above ident. That was my answer to someone when I first came here, and I asked a question everyone but me knew the answer to. It reminded me of it.

I worked with Sandboxie for a couple of weeks and now understand it a bit more. I can see its value if you are surfing all over the place but I don't unless it I know the site is safe and if I wasn't sure then I would click on Sandboxie and begin to search. I was having a hard time when I would download a program(just to check it out) and up came a SB tag.
So my question is how do I use both SB and IE8 together but keep SB sitting on the sidelines only to be used when I go searching.
I use a program called WOT which tells me the site I am going to is safe or not with 3 colored coded circles. Green, yellow and red.
I am sorry for wasting IDENT's time with my sarcarsm but I couldn't help myself.

born2golf I really don't understand the way that you are using Sandboxie.
I just go surfing sandboxed ..end of story.
I have it set up so that when I close my browser any programs I have downloaded then appear in a Sandboxie window which asks me if I want to recover them to my desktop. Cannot see the problem you have with that.

I use IE7Pro with IE8; that has ad-blocking built in and you can customise it yourself.
(Beware; I believe IE8 needs a tweak to work properly with IE7. I had to do it but can't remember what it was. I was already well hooked on IE7Pro as a long-time IE7 user.)

I'm with hazel I think, and I'm not sure how you are using Sandboxie as it sounds like you may be missing the simplicity of it's use, and over complicating it.
To have it sitting on the sidelines isn't really the way to use it. You launch your browser "Sandboxed" every time, and as your experience with Sandboxie grows, so will your knowledge of how to configure it to suit your needs.
It not only protects you from Malware, it places absolutely every useless bit of junk that's downloaded to your computer while you're browsing, into the one location, to be deleted in one fell swoop.
And even "safe sites" can be breached by the bad guys without the site knowing anything about it.
So my suggestion would be to maybe start at the beginning with Sandboxie, and configure your default browser to always launch "Sandboxed".
Then pick our brains as to how to configure different things like "Quick" and "Immediate Recovery", as well as deciding as to whether you want to automatically delete the Sandbox when you close your browser.
Once you have it set up the way you want it, you can virtually run it and forget about it.
Hope that may help, and as I say, you're free to pick our brains as much as you like.

Dennis, which is my name also, I agree with your above statements. I was overcomplicating the program. As with anything new it takes time to figure out and find all the nicks and crannies in a program. I am feeling more at ease with Sandboxie as I use it as a default browser. I will update and have questions for you as time goes on. Thanks for being there during my trial and error time. Have a great week-end!
