Norton/Symantec

I have Norton anti-virus installed on a Compaq (HP) laptop. I wanted to do a comprehensive scan, but had to back up my files first. While this was happening, the laptop froze (didn't do anything for hours)...

Shut it down...Now it won't start up at all...

Called the Norton line and was told to stand by for tech help...waited 2 hours and no-one answered (thank goodness for speaker phones).

Laptop will start in SAFE mode, but nothing happens when I click on any icons...

The Compaq startup help system freezes in "command response" mode...

Help!!!

Are you saying this happened after running CCleaner?

If not, I'm not sure what this has to do with this forum?

If so, did you run the Reg cleaner and did you just willy Nilly?

Read my Signature

and reinstall Norton/Symantec

What happened to the new "nice" Nergal? He would welcome any problem, CCleaner related or not.

Get that "nice" head back on. :D

Hi gw9112, and welcome to the forum,

Sorry to hear about your problems, but as Nergal asks, was it a CCleaner scan, or were you doing a Norton scan?

I'll assume you are XP here, and you can put that right if not.

So you can't do anything in safe mode at all? In that case, have you tried using the "Last Known Good Configuration", which you can access in the same way as accessing safe mode? And if the worst came to the worst, do you have a "Recovery Partition". My pc is HP, and the "Recovery Partition" is called "Presario_RP (D:).

Try and provide more info about what exactly happens in safe mode, and what exactly you were doing when the problem started.

Reinstalling software, again as Nergal mentioned, can be a good fix, but we need to know if you if you could actually do that with the problem you have.
