Newbie Seeks Knowledge of Register

I make my initial inquiry at

http://gladiator-antivirus.com/forum/index...mp;#entry162001

Based on advice in that thread, I downloaded CCleaner AND REGCLEANER, and followed some links, to learn that regcleaner is no longer supported. I joined the forum which REGCLEANER mentioned

http://www.macecraft.com/phpBB2/index.php

and learned that jv16powertools and REGSUPREME are the current programs which correspont to REGCLEANER.

There are technicians who still use REGCLEANER and say it works very well, but it is no longer supported by the author.

Anyway, since I am a beginner, who desires to learn about backingup, modifying and restoring the registry, it occurs to me to purchase a very cheap machine, and windows xp, so that I can install and reinstall and ruin the machine as often as I please, with no inconvenience or loss.

REGARDING CCleaner, how knowledgable to I need to be to use it without harming my computer? I have windows xp on a Dell.

Thanks!

Hello Karebac and welcome to the forum :)

Have a look at the CCleaner guide here, if you have any more questions after reading it just ask.

the CCleaner registry cleaner is extremely newbie friendly it seems.you dont really need to be knowledgeable.as long as you make sure you have backups you will be fine.

two registry cleaners i mainly use are "registry mechanic" and "winaso registry optimizer".unfortunately they not freeware.they let u compress and optimize ur registry, and restore backups easy.

just be careful what registry programs you use,and always make backups,as some reg cleaners are too aggressive and ur pc may get messed up.

Look up the lastfreeware version of Jv16, unsupported but works well also.

these days I just use CCleaner & easy cleaner for junk and registry entries and NTREGOPT for compression

lastfreeware Jv16: http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/index.html#jv16

easycleaner: http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/ecleane.htm

NTREGOPT: http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

for newbie friendliness just stick to CCleaner and NTREGOPT both really simple.

easycleaner & Jv16 arn't hard to learn but be careful what you delete, especially with the duplicate file checker...
