New version of this excellent program.
It might be worth a mention that there are other versions available on the download page for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, and Windows 2000.

Thanks Dennis; I have to make sure to try this out later.
It's an awesome tagger, I use it in conjunction with Foobar2000's impressive tagging abilities.
What is MP3tag?
What is MP3tag?
An awesome free universal audio file tagger that rivals even its commercial competition. The description of all it can do is best stated on its homepage:
Not to sound dumb, but what exactly is an audio file tagger? What is tagging? What are the benefits?

Example:
You've edited an MP3 tag in Winamp, or Foobar2000, or Windows Media Player, etc., to change the displayed artist name, song title, and album, which is then properly shown in your media player. Well that's tagging in a nutshell.
Tag's are also referred to as Metadata.
Just to add a bit to Andavari's info.
Most portable players now have video capability, and the video screen is used to display the album information in much greater detail than players that don't.
One of the added benefits of having a video screen is the ability to display album artwork as well as the track number, track name, album artist, track length, and genre.
To get a portable player to display this information correctly, it has to be embedded into each track, including the album artwork. I know of folk who think all you need do is place the artwork into the folder with the tracks, but it's not that simple.
Mp3tag does this embedding thing, and it has the ability to search online for all the album information, and then to embed that information into each track.
Here's one I made earlier:
All the information on the left, including the artwork, is embedded into track one. This will make it display correctly in a portable player.
If you use certain media organizers, like iTunes, it will do this for you if set up correctly, but if you don't, then this is the way to do it yourself.
Although I use Windows Media Player to manage my music library, and transfer it to my Walkman, I do the "tagging" with Mp3tag. It really is the best out there.
Hope that helps.
Very good info Dennis!
It's also important for people to know when tagging MP3's it can help to enable this for maximum compatibility with all software players and devices, since some may refuse the newer ID3v2.4:
