Hello all. I have a brand new Thinkpad T60, and noticed the other day that in my Add/Remove programs list there was an entry simply titled "<no name>". Someone recommended that I download and use CCleaner, as this would likely get rid of the issue. I just downloaded CCleaner, hit "Analyze" and OK'd the removal of all of the things that popped up under the Cleaner Tab. I then ran a check on Issues and OK'd about 108 issues to be fixed. However, after doing this, I noticed that the <no name> entry still appeared, so I went to the Tools section, highlighted the entry and clicked uninstall, which resolved the problem. My question is: Was doing all of these things safe? I know that the Cleaner removes only unimportant files, but is it possible that I could have modified or deleted something important by fixing all of the issues (many of which included registry entries or missing shared DLL files), or could I have done something bad by clicking uninstall on the "<no name>" entry, espceially considering I have no idea what it is? Considering I'm not that technical, I usually try to avoid the registry at all costs, so I want to make sure I didn't just possibly get rid of some important files.
By the way, I left all settings on the CCleaner as they were when I installed the program.
Hi Hazelnut, thanks very much for your response. I've read through the Beginners' Guide and found it very helpful. I just have a few more questions, if anyone wouldn't mind helping me out.
I did indeed backup my registry when prompted before running the "Issues" check. However, not really knowing what certain registry files are, I just unconditionally OK'd all of the issues. For future reference, is that a bad idea? And in my particular case, if I had deleted something important, would I know about it by now? Or is it something that could pop up as a problem in the future? Since fixing every issue yesterday, everything seems to have been OK so far (except that one program froze, but I'm assuming that's just a coincidence).
Also, I didn't see much in the Beginners' Guide about the add/remove programs tool. Was it safe for me to click "uninstall" on that random <no name> entry? And one more question if anyone knows: At the bottom of my add/remove program list on CCleaner, there are a lot of blank spaces that I can click on as if they are entries. Is that normal?
Thanks so much guys. Sorry if I sound paranoid, I just got this computer and tend to be hypersensitive to messing things up.
Chris
Hello Seleur
When you do an issues clean you are offered the choice of saving a backup of the reg entries you are deleting.
