I am upgrading the RAM in my netbook from 1 to 2 GB (max supported).
Was wondering if I ran my entire OS in RAM, if it would speed up netbook operations, similar to SSD improvements?

Give it a go and let us know.
Thank you, Hazel!
It may be a bit after Christmas before I have a chance to add the RAM, but it sounds like a great idea to test.
I will try to update you all on the results in say, a week or two when I try it.
I wonder if 2gb would be enough to do it?
Still struggling with this downloadaholic thing, I've downloaded that.
I wonder if logins seen it?
I can run Windows with 1GB RAM fairly decent. I believe 2 will work ok, but not sure yet.
Things I may want to try are:
-> 32 Bit Windows uses slightly less RAM than 64 Bit
-> XP uses 90 MB clean installed, and perhaps 300 MB or less with AVG installed
-> Windows 2,000 may use fewer resources than XP
Have wondered about stooping so low as to try Windows 2,000 on it. Some say it may get a 20% performance boost.
The thing that I hate about Windows 2,000 is it will only see 1 of my 2 cores on my netbook.
But I still want to try it, just to see what happens. Maybe I will even try puppy linux, linux mint, or reactos!
* RAM is generally considered about 1,000 times faster than HDD access, though it can vary. If this works, it may help speed up older computers!

Yep, got it. >sigh< Might as well stop going to those darned meetings.

We're having much more fun in the pub aren't we, swapping installers and download stories.
. . . and free wifi there
What's interesting about this, is one website says using a RAM disk is about 10X faster than an SSD, & 100X faster than HDD... Interesting!!!
How are you doing with it SF?
How would you set this up to run your OS in it?
I haven't got the RAM yet (Christmas present).
It may be a week or two after C-Mas before I can install the new RAM & do the RAM-Disk.
I'll keep you guys updated.
Wow!!
Thank you so much Alan. I picked up their newest offer of 4gb of DDR2 which downloaded and installed without a hitch ...
No problems at all so far.
In fact, you wouldn't know it was there.
Just what I needed for one of my machines. Downloaded without a hitch and my machine is so fast now my typing speed has increased by 47% (didn't know ram could do that)
Just replaced the 1GB RAM stick with 2GB. As expected, system rating changed little, if at all.
But with 2GB, it runs slight smoother & has enough to support 64 Bit Windows as well.
Have a lot to test, this could take time, but I intend to update later.
