My Fingerprint Reader stopped working after running CCleaner

I have a Lenovo 520S and my fingerprint reader stopped working after running ccleaner. How do I recover fingerprint login capability?

What parts of CCleaner did you run?

In particular did you run the driver updater and update the driver for the biometrics?

If so then use the ‘Fix a problem’ button in the software updater to see if you can roll it back.

(Or try using Lenovo Vantage to update/repair your drivers).

If it wasn’t a driver issue then you could try using Windows Hello to reset your fingerprints.

I ran the whole list of Things to update. Under Driver Updater, it says “Updating 1 of 1 drivers” and has Synaptics WBDI to v5.3.3545.26 and "Preparing for installation?

Sounds possible, that is a fingerprint reader driver, and one that is used by Lenovo laptops.
Why is it pending instalation though and not completing?

I’d try doing a ‘Restart’ (not Shutdown) of your computer.
I would also suggest looking on the Lenovo forum for anyone having solved similar issues.

It has been “Preparing for installation” for at least 30 min with no apparent progress. The Task Manager shows 0% CPU for CCleaner

I believe that CCleaner may have done a partial install WBDI and now it cannot be completed or removed

Did a Restart and laptop comes back up and does nothing automatic i.e. does not restart install. When I open CCleaner and check Driver updates I says “Updating 1 of 1 drivers” as before with no progress

Sounds like the update is stuck, that can happen if an update needs a response that CCleaner can’t give it.

WI would do in such a circumstance is to ‘End Task’ on everything CCleaner related in Task Manager, that should stop and clear the stuck updating.
Then I’d go into Windows Device Manager and uninstall the fingerprint reader.
Then do a ‘Scan for hardware changes’ which should reinstall the reader with a suitable driver.
(You will have to re-scan your fingerprints once the reader has reinstalled).
