More cleaning power needed!

Hello,

I'v been using CCleaner for quite sometime. In fact I also use Ashampoo Winoptimizer (with some added masks) and Easycleaner, esp. for cleaning unneeded files. While CCleaner seems to be nice in its own way, in my experience it dosent quite clean as much as the other two.

Besides that, today I found some big files lying in the C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\ErrorRep\UserDumps folder. they are .hdmp and .mdmp files. After searching for info on the net, I found that it seems these files are created for effor reporting and can also be deleted. Would be nice if CCleaner can add these to its cleaning oomph! It can make a very big difference, as usually these files can be quite large!

welcome to the CC forums :D

theres an option to add custom folders so you could add that folder.

i wouldnt recommend it because there may be inportant stuff in there but if your positive there isnt, you could add it. :)

Thanks... :)

IMHO, it might be better to add file masks for .hdmp and .mdmp files ...rather than the whole folder ...please correct me if I'm wrong. Is it possible to specify masks (for eg. " *.hdmp "), like it is in Ashampoo, etc?

Also, is it absolutely safe to delete these files? When I googled for it, I found some people saying it is safe ...but the info is sketchy. Would appreciate some kind of concrete stand on this. And if it is safe, it really would be worthwhile to provide this option in CCleaner ...rather than it requiring a manual entry ...moreover most users wont know about it!

One more question ...I see that in the latest versions, there is an option to deleted "Hotfix Uninstallers". Do I presume this just deletes hotfix backup files in the Windows folders like $NtUninstallKB*$, etc? From what I know it can in some cases be dicy to remove these files as sometimes they are required for future updates, etc. (hence better to back them up somewhere)... So would appreciate if you could tell me what this option actually does.

i looked on microsofts website via search and i dont think its safe to delete these because theres not much info about it.

better safe than sorry!

hotfix uninstallers, some people have had trouble after deleting these.

thats why they are in the advanced tab. :)

i do however make a system restore point every sunday right before i run any cleaners or do anything.

also, if you made it a mask, which is possible, other programs may also use this extension so it may delete more info then specified.

In my case it seems to be fairly safe to delete the files - one if the files bears the name of my anti virus executable plus some long number postfixed and the .hdmp extension. Also there is svchost with the same name format. I could not find any info about the files with MS, but there is info on some other sites (how reliable, is another issue!). If my memory serves me correct, & in short, the .hdmp are memory dumps created by the error reporting system ..and the .mdmp compressed versions of the .hdmp. And the file sizes in my case also seem to support that...

I so wish M$ would at least document their messy OS better, so we dont have to speculate...

Anyway, have deleted the files (to the recycle bin) ...no problems experienced yet... <_<

alright, good to hear.

if you could test this out for a month or so then PM MrG if no problems come up, he may add it to an upgrade.

remember this site isnt only for Ccleaner discussion.

feel free to stick around and ask questions or help answer some if you wish :D

Thanks, will try... :)

As for the hdmp/mdmp files ...I was forced to delete them to make space. And, nothing has kaboomed yet!... B) IMHO, it should really be considered to add this in forthcoming CCleaner versions. In fact there is scope for more ...as I did mention CCleaner does miss stuff which Easycleaner, Ashampoo, etc, find...

At least the option to include user specified masks (with wildcards) could be implemented ...instead of the option to include only specific files!
