Good Evening.

I have a problem with ActiveX/COM. - My computer frequently slows down, and i have to wait big amount of time to do anything in system (things like running apps or searching something in searching panel). The only way i can remove this problem is opening CCleaner (it takes about 1-2 minutes), searching an issues, and "repair" the problem with ActiveX/COM. After this process my computer is running fast again for about few hours. Then the issue comes back, and i have to do same process. This problem is really upseting and makes me nervous so I am asking for Your help.

That particular registry entry is used by Cortana, Accessibility Options (Ease of Access), and some audio drivers. 

It can 'break' those things if completely removed.


Because it's needed Windows will put it straight back if you remove it.

The pathname that you give is the genuine pathname for speechruntime and as it should be.

Normally we would say to leave it alone, (normally we would say not to use the Registry Cleaner at all with Windows 10), but if you are sure that removing that particular registry entry (only that and nothing else) cures your slowdown problem then it's indicating that something else is wrong somewhere.

I don't belive it's the reg entry itself that is the problem, temporarily removing it is just clearing/resetting whatever is the problem.

Is there something that you are doing/using in particular when the computer slows down? 

Is it when you are using one particular app?


Do you have a music app or something similar playing in the background?

When your computer slows down try opening Task Manager to see just what is using all the Memory or all the CPU, that should indicate where the problem actually is.

Check your settings for Cortana, and for any audio apps/drivers that you have installed.

If you don't use Cortana then you could consider disabling it: (Note that you will have to use the Registry Editor - if you are not comfortable using it then get a friend who is familiar with it to help you)

(Disabling Cortana will not remove the speechruntime registry entry, but it takes Coratna away as the possible cause of your slowdowns).

Are you using any accessibility options, especially any 3rd party (not Microsoft) accessibility apps? 

If you are then it may be a 'memory leak' from that.

@nukecad I had this issue with my computer again but today i acted different than normaI. l didn't clean my computer with CCleaner after running PC (as usual), and I didn't use him when the situation happened. I just waited for about 2 minutes and my computer was running normally again. I was about to use CCleaner but today it just didn't open. When the issue stopped from itself, CCleaner opened and all system things were normal again.

Circumstances: I was playing a game and I saw it is lagging and i have really low frames per second.

Apps running in background: Steam (as usual when the issue happens), Discord(as usual when the issue happens), Razer Synapse/Configurator (first time running when the issue happened), Task Manager (first time running when the issue happened), Google Chrome (as usual when the issue happens).

Task Manager: I didn't look at the amount of RAM, but as I saw - nothing was at 100% of usage. (What scares me a little bit, because i see the problem isn't just in usage of processor or graphic card.)

What I did before issue happened: I thought it can be caused by my almost filled up system disk C, I cleaned it up from about 40GB, but it didn't secure me from today's issue.

What weird I saw on my computer today:

- I saw that my Discord notifications have weird "com.squirrel.Discord.Discord" adding which never showed before (screen below).

- My Discord call wasn't interrupted or disturbed with any problems or interferences when the issue happened (I mean the voice was clear).

What I think: In my opinion it is some sort of system problem which have a connection with notifications or discord. I don't think Discord caused it but i think the issue and Discord can have a connection. I don't know did CCleaner caused the issue, I only know that CCleaner could remove the issue when it happens.

You have nailed the cause.

I don't use or really know Discord, but as said above that particular registry entry is concerned with audio, so your findings make sense.

A quick search finds that "com.squirrel.Discord.Discord" is a separate application that is used by the Discord installer, and that notification is seen when Discord is updating/has updated itself.

So it's Discord updates in the background that are slowing things down for a while on your machine.

Once the Discord update has finished then your machine should speed up to normal again, which is what you report above with things going back to normal after a couple of minutes.

You are not the only one to have issues with this slowdown when Discord is updating, this thread was started 2 years ago and people are still asking for a way to turn the automatic updates off:

Any update, of anything, happening in the background can slow things down for a while.

Apparently Discord does update itself frequently, and as said in that link there is no setting that you can use to stop this updating behaviour from Discord.

(I have seen one option to stop them altogether, but it's an all or nothing and you may not want to leave Discord with no updates at all. I'll leave you to find that yourself if you want to, it's not hard to find).

So as things stand it looks like you are stuck with the occasional slowdown, unless you stop using Discord, but at least you now know what is causing your occasional slowdowns.

As for clearing that reg entry using CCleaner. 

Doing that probably stopped the Discord/Squirrel update process (because the update process relied on that reg entry) and so your speed would go back to normal - until discord decided to check for updates again and started redoing the one that you had stopped (because by then Windows had put the reg entry back).

PS. If you don't want to see that 'SpeechRuntime.exe' in CCleaner then next time it shows right-click on it and select 'Add to Exclude List', CCleaner won't show it to you again.

@nukecad I think it can be it, but we have a problem. Few minutes ago the issue happend again shortly after running pc when i had only Google Chrome opened (also as usual when the issue happenes). Discord wasn't even in my processes in task manager, so i am little bit shocked what happened here. I will turn off the Google Chrome and not use him for day or two days so we can see if the issue strikes again. I am now pretty sure that it is connected to Google Chrome or Discord. As i said Google Chrome was always in use when the issue happened, so we will see.

What i reminded: I saw that my computer is booting to windows very very slow sometimes (often/usually when i use restart PC option). I think it is important so i had to write it.

Did task manager show Squirrel (the seperate updater) running in the background even though Discord wasn't open? 

I'm thinking that it may still have been updating Discord.

If your computer is working as normal, slows down, then after a while goes back to normal that is most likely a sign that something is updating in the background. 

Windows Defender definitions can often be the culprit there, they update at least daily.

Sometimes a slow boot is because Windows Update is updating things in the background when you boot. 

Often Defender definitions again, but you will also see it lasting much longer when you first boot or restart following every second Tuesday of each month - This week was the second Tuesday in the month.


That's because Microsoft push out Windows 10 updates on that Tuesday, which download on Tuesday or Wednesday and then install next time you start the computer thus slowing it down for a while.

Browsers such as Chrome and Firefox, and other softwares also push out monthly updates at the same time.

As well as updates:

Restart will always take longer than Shutdown/Boot with Windows 10, it's the way Windows 10 works.

Shutdown will always hibernate the Windows Kernel so that it can then boot faster. 

(That's a different thing from you selecting 'Hibernate' which hibernates everything that you have open).

Restart does not hibernate the Kernel and so starts Windows completely from scratch, which takes longer. 

You should do a restart regularly, to clear things out. Windows Update will usually make you do a Restart at least once a month, but some recommend once a day is better.


(It's also why anyone helping with a problem will tell you to do a Restart and not a Shutdown - Restart clears more in Windows 10).

If background updates or processes are really slowing you down then it may be time to consider updating your computer or getting a new one. 

Get more RAM in there if you can, get a bigger Hard Drive or better yet get a Solid State Drive (SSD).

I'd also suggest running ADWcleaner from Malwarebytes, it can remove unwanted/uneeded apps that are slowing things down, use with care and check what it saying can be removed (you might actually want/use some of it).

@nukecad I am after few days after using Opera instead of Chrome. I can say - this issues was little different and appeared less frequent than normal.

About this "Squirrel" - I didn't see this process in task manager (when Discord was turned on and off). This weird "com.squirrel.Discord.Discord" adding is still in my Discord notification.

I will do full scan of my computer with Windows Defender and Malwarebytes if it can help.

I want to reinstall Discord and see what will happen, what's Your opinion about this idea?

Try googling "com.squirrel.discord.discord" to see info and discission about that notification and what it is.

@nukecad I reinstalled discord, my notifications are fine now, but we will see will i get this issues again.

I am now only waiting for Windows Defender to end scan of my computer.

@nukecad I am after scanning my computer and I found one danger/virus, but i don't know is it important for our case and this weird issue topic. I send screenshot what Windows Defender found:

That is a browser hijacker, not particularly nasty but definitely something you don't want.

I don't know if it's the cause of your problem but let Defender remove it.

Then scan again with Defender and Malwarebytes. 

And as said above I'd also download/scan with Malwarebytes ADWcleaner, although the two overlap most of the time ADW can find different things from the main Malwarebytes and vice-versa.

@nukecadAfter few days I am sure it is a problem with Discord. I don't know what can i do now.

However as noted in that thread I linked above Discord automatic updates slowing down computers is a long standing complaint among Discord users.
