Just looking at the "Spyware Hell "forum,I have noticed that there are no outstanding requests for help.a few years ago there were many threads dealing with all sorts of threats.(As it was when I joined and needed help)So are we getting better at protecting our selves ?to the credit of forums like piriform,?.Is the antimalware software better?, or are there less threats out there ? or is there some other factor ?either way it seems good news !
Honestly - it's probably a combination of things. I don't think we can attribute it to one thing.

I think the people who frequent this forum, as well as many others like it, must be getting the message about using programs like Sandboxie and Returnil, and the importance of life saving practices like making backup Disk Images of their System Drives with software like Macrium Reflect (Free version).
All these things used properly and regularly, can virtually negate the risk of ending up with a badly infected PC, needing to be expertly cleaned.
I'm sure there are still plenty of folk out their with serious problems, but I do think many people are wising up to "good practices".
And simply by opening up this topic Fluff, there'll probably be a few more.
There are also lots of people with serious malware problems, but that don't know they have, or simply think it is normal.
I once found a PC with lots of malware/adware on it. There was an AV installed (a well-known free one). When I ran it... it found nearly everything. The full scan had never been ran before, even though there were lots of porn ads when opening IE, and "admin restrictions" everywhere in options. Why ? Because they thought everything was normal, and simply blamed Windows.
Agree with Aethec.
